norbertnl Posted August 2, 2024 Share #1  Posted August 2, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has any one of you used Squarehood's 12524-replica in silver chrome? Does the color of this hood match the silver chrome of the Summicron and do you consider the mounting (one screw on the left, one on the right) reliable? There are photos on their website as well as a short videoclip on YouTube, but it remains somewhat unclear what the hood really looks and feels like. Thank you very much; greetings from Berlin 🙂
Advertisement Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Hi norbertnl, Take a look here Squarehood replica of 12524 (KOB) / 12526 (Summicron 35mm ASPH Version I) ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pippy Posted August 2, 2024 Share #2 Â Posted August 2, 2024 Interesting concept in terms of mounting the hood. I noticed that they mention it can be used with the 28 Emarit ASPH v1 and wondered how the lack of an alignment-tab would work with their hood but from what I can gather from having watched the video there is a small tab which would slip into the v-shaped notch on the lens. Clever. As far as how it feels goes? Well; it's made from aluminium so will be very light and is anodised so my guess is that it will have a very finely textured surface similar to the ubiquitous Leitz 12585 et al. All-in-all rather a nice item! Philip.

The 12585 and 12504 being nice as well, they tend to rotate and polish the groove that holds the hood in place. Advantage of a square hood is that rotation must be prevented. I think the notch on the 28 Elmarit ASPH v1 is similar to the ones on 35 Summicron pre- and ASPH V1, all matching the small tab you're referring to.

I believe you are correct with the tab-location of some of the Leitz lenses. Small point (and probably not that important to many users) but there is a distinct advantage of being able to rotate the 12504 when it is being used in conjunction with the 13370 Series VII Circular Polarising Filter. Rotating the Filter/Hood unit makes selecting the optimal polarising orientation very simple due to the hood/filter unit being clipped into place on the front mount of the lens barrel. By comparison the E39 POOTR is a PITA when used with shorter-than-50mm lenses becase the 'correct' hoods cannot slip past the whole thickness of the filter and fingers need to get down and into the front of the lens to change orientation. As far as using the 'Squarehood' on the 28mm Elmarit ASPH v1 is concerned that raises a question as the hood supplied with that lens (having just checked on the set sitting to my left) the Elmarit's hood is a 12526; not a 12524. There might not be much difference between the two Leitz / Leica designs, of course, but it might be worth doing some 'due diligence' for anyone considering such a purchase? But yes; a Very Nice Hood! Philip.. Edited August 3, 2024 by pippy
