stuny Posted December 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Throughout much of Namibia & Botswana we got to see these delightful birds, yellow billed hornbills and red billed hornbills. The first is in Damaraland, Namibia, near where we tracked black rhino on foot. The second is in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, at Chitabe. The locals call the yellow billed the “flying banana”. Personally, I like any creature with a nose larger than mine.

imported_peter_m Posted December 11, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 11, 2007 Those are some interesting looking birds. Nice catch Stuart. Looking at the body shape.... wonder if they are related to wood peckers?? Peter
stuny Posted December 11, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted December 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Robert, Ivan, Gunnar, Peter P & Peter M - Thank you. As my friend Ivan writes, they do have an ancient, pre-historic look to them. One of many interesting things about Africa is when North Americans or Europeans visit, even if they arrive indifferent to birds, the vast variety and abundance of birds in Africa changes the visitors to at least appreciate birds, and often to become birders. Peter M comments on their bodies seeming related to woodpeckers, and he might be right. These birds are nearly as charming in flight as they are in posing.
