thank you all for your message of support. Leica have been told so if it ever goes for a service…..
A leica ‘ track your camera’ function would be handy. Door…. Horse….Stable.

Even the black sticker is defeated by security X-ray machines….

I am so sorry to hear that your kit has been stolen. I hope it is insured and you will get at least some money back.

Can you tell what happened - just curious to understand the methods to try to prepare myself - however I doubt that there are many useful protection measures (air tags, ugly bags, black dots etc. definitely aren't)

Re. "track your camera" - my bike had a GPS control. After it was stolen at my home it reported for some weeks the current location on probably 30m radius. However nobody was able or willing to get back the bike (including myself - I do not want to risk my health by offending a thief or receiver). The police's response was interesting - they tried to locate the bike but wheren't allowed to enter any buildings in the perimeter of the GPS location without search warrant (and they wouldn't get one just because of a GPS signal)

Very sorry to hear of your misfortune, hopefully you get it back.

It might be a good idea to publish the serial number of the camera here so we can keep a look out for it.

Edit: I've just seen the title includes the serial number. Will keep an eye out on the usual portals.

5590332 is the serial number

Always keep the camera with you. Always keep the bag in sight .

My bag had to be moved from under the seat as i was in a emergency exit row to an overhead locker far away from my seat.

Check the bag for the camera at all times. Use a shoulder bag rather than a roller bag.

Even a “transport mode” locking the camera requiring a 6 digit pin before it can be used again would help.

There are at least two precautions I have exercised in the past to reduce the risk of theft on a plane.

Firstly, avoid removing the camera in sight of anyone at the airport. I keep my camera in a cloth or neoprene drawstring bag which goes into a case in my carry-on bag (usually a backpack). If the camera ever has to come out, it stays in the drawstring bag and away from prying eyes (unless removed by security of course).

Secondly, lock the carry on bag, or at least the zip section containing the camera. It’s unlikely a would be thief will carry a tool that could be used to break a travel lock while they’re poking around in an overhead bin. Unless they take the entire bag, of course.

Either way, you’ve been incredibly unlucky on this occasion. I hope you have some recourse.

This is so sad. I'm so sorry to hear that was happened. I think everyone should be more careful with his camera. This is a lesson for everybody

Commiserations, how miserable. I put my camera at my feet when I travel but obviously in the emergency rows that's not allowed. Seeing as I never upgrade or pay for seats that's not an issue for. I also usually travel with my oberwerth tag half case on one of the cameras (and an apple tag in the base of the bag). I realise the police would be no use at all but you've have found your camera at the baggage pickup via 'find my'. Would have been an interesting chat!

When I arrive however I take off the cases as they make the lovely svelte camera much more bulky so they stay in the accommodation. Clearly I then pick up all of the risk but the chance of convincing French/Spanish/Italian police for follow up on an apple tag is I suspect less than zero.

Hopefully you're insured. I ask every time my household insurance is renewed and they re-assure me they are covered but I still live in fear of finding out there's a gotcha when push comes to shove.

I have a separate policy for valuables, which includes cameras, watches and jewelry - stuff that you take places. I think it’s worth it for that peace of mind. Does’t help the OP though and I will think twice about moving to an exit row in future.

so to get this: someone on a plane, where you need to identify yourself with an id , stole the camera? 
 

so 200-300 people are on this plane. 
 

this should be very easy to find out, or? 
 

My policy is: I always have the camera on my body or at my seat. I never leave the came alone.

Unfortunate.. I just returned from a three plus week international photo vacation.  I have one more suggestion.  AirTag all of your luggage.  Upon returning, my daughter’s luggage was lost, but the AirTag showed us that it was on the tarmac vs back in Korea.  This helped with recovery.
