250swb Posted September 1, 2024 Share #21  Posted September 1, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) It sounds to me like the shop you bought it from are intent on you taking the hit, whether in time or money or both, and not them. I doubt it costs $2000 for Leica to build the camera in the first place and the repair price is symptomatic of many luxury goods where the manufacturer welcomes repairs as a second bite of the cherry. An example would be a scratched wheel on a Bentley, a specialist wheel refurbisher may charge £100 to make it good as new, but go to Bentley and they want £3000 for a new wheel. It's time for them to take the camera back, give a refund, and deal with at their leisure and not on your time.

I’ll wait to see their next reply after they talk to Leica again before I get more pissed.

I’ll send them an email just to check. But Map’s (where I bought it) warranty does not cover outside repair shops. Out of morbid curiosity, what does their warranty cover? Do they have a Leica specialist in house? If you ultimately cannot get any sensible resolution from them, in your shoes I would still take it to Kanto. Much faster than Leica, cheaper, and actually competent. Edited September 1, 2024 by Mute-on

Looks like Kanto's repair turnaround is 4-5 months,  but I will confirm after they get back from their vacation next week. I can live with that if the price is reasonable. Their painting service is estimated at two years right now, so I'm glad that doesn't also apply to repairs.
blackdot Posted September 4, 2024 Author Share #25  Posted September 4, 2024 So I got another reply. Map Camera is definitely a lot sleazier than I thought. Here is their logic: - Leica Japan says the problem can likely be fixed without any special parts, but that they cannot work on cameras this old (WHAT?) so it will need to go to Germany. - Map does not send to any other shops, and since their only repair shop is incompetent, it's either wait 14 months or fix it myself and waive the warranty. Definitely never shopping there again.

Life is too short and Map camera has lost more than one (potential) customer. May their karma infect their business with a plague of lens fungus and desilvered prisms.
M9reno Posted September 4, 2024 Share #27 Â Posted September 4, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Map Camera has not covered itself in glory here, and this thread all but ensures that future Google searches by potential customers won't yield flattering results. That being said, thankfully it does not sound from your description of the issue like waiving the warranty, and having the camera repaired by someone competent, will be prohibitively difficult, expensive, or slow. Â You will hopefully be back to enjoying your camera very soon. Edited September 4, 2024 by M9reno

They can see my purchase history and that I have impulse control issues when it comes to Leica. I want to check Kanto's prices, as I've heard they can get up there. There is another smaller shop that is faster and probably quite cheap, but I want to see if they can do the anti-flare finder upgrade like Kanto can.  Also, while I'm in there, does anyone know if it is possible to mod an M6TTL to not let the rewind crank spin backwards if you let go of it while rewinding (which is nearly impossible not to)? I thought I had read somewhere that the new M6 doesn't do this, and it is one of my main complaints about the older cranks.

Yeah, I've relaxed about it now after they admitted that it is not actually a difficult repair. Didn't stop me from being a bit nasty in my email, by Japanese standards anyway. blackdot Posted September 7, 2024 Author Share #30 Â Posted September 7, 2024 I have to walk back my previous harsh comments (wish I could edit), as Map is now contacting domestic repair facilities. It seems like they are not very happy with Leica's repair issues as well, but haven't been able to do anything about it. Not sure what happened internally over the last few days, but it appears they are now trying a different approach.

Maybe they saw this thread or talked about it among the other staff/mangers and decided that it wasn’t worth ruining their reputation.
