I think he is referring to the status light, to me that's not a big deal. You can kinda see it if you peak in between the case and camera.

I hope you already have discovered the rear LED (status light), just under the MENU button 😉

My grip arrived today and I'm quite impressed. It's comfortable, nice looking and best of all the design allows access to the battery and memory card without removing the grip. Leica might want to think about a redesign for theirs. It comes with a nice case (faux wood) and tool for tightening the screw.

I bought the same one with dark brown wood? but I didn't received it in a wooden box! I don't mind as the grip will stay on the body and the box wouldn't have a use.

Very good quality and grip!

It actually is a soft plastic that just looks like wood. When I opened the box I also thought it was real wood.

Hi

New to this forum.

I have got a D-Lux 8 for a couple of months and recently I bought the hand grip which is definitely a must have for me as it gives the ability to firmly hold the camera with one hand.

Congrats with your D-Lux 8. What worries me are the metal rings you have attached to the Peak Design loops. They will damage the body!. Try to get the loops through the eye and you are all set.

Hello! Does anyone know if Leica plans on releasing a grip for the 100 year anniversary D-Lux 8? I just wish the grip was the same texture as the leather on the 100YA body. Thanks.

I contacted Leica about this last week, their reply via e-mail was that there are no plans for a grip for the 100 Years of Leica D-Lux 8

I appreciate you looking into it! I'm probably going to end up getting a halfcase with a built in grip.

I rather like the Leica hand grip for the D-Lux 8. The styling and design are a superb match to the camera. Yes, the grip is spendy, but that sort of comes with the Leica territory.

The grip provides superior purchase to the camera for my large hands. The stock camera is a looker, but it never felt secure in my paws.

I really thought I was going to be annoyed with having to remove the grip to change the memory card or battery, but it turned out to be a complete non-issue.

It sort of brought back nostalgic memories of the process of changing out a roll of film after the last picture had been taken.

I originally ordered the 100 Years of Leica version, but figured out grip wouldn't match, and there's a couple more changes I didn't like on the anniversary edition (they changed the zoom toggle, seems more uncomfortable to use, they also removed the small thumb rest), so I cancelled that order and got a regular D-Lux 8 instead, waiting for my grip to arrive!

When come to grip, it is generally all about equally comfortable of different brands. But I would pay attention to two things, the first is the degree f protection, this is where the half case stands out better. The second is the size of the grip, that is, the depth. Some grip might have kind of half cylinder shape, this is usually shallow and a little difficult to hold firmly. I prefer the type that looks like a quarter cylinder. It is thicker and easier to hold.

Leica’s grip is between the two types. Personally I prefer the thicker type.YMMV.

I bought the much less expensive version by JJC from Amazon and it just feels totally natural. In addition to accessing the battery without removing it, it has a wee amount of foot on it so you can stand the camera up independently without any concern of it falling over.

I tried the JJC and Hoage body grips and thumb grips, as well as a few of the leather half cases.

For me, the Hoage grips (body and thumb) work the best.  The three leather cases I tried didn't fit correctly.  The JJC grips fit well, but I prefer the more sloped body and thumb grips of Hoage's, though I have to admit the JJC thumb grip looked better.

The problem for me with the JJC thumb grip is that when I'm shooting any position other than the body gripped firmly in my right hand and up to my eye, the sharper angle of my thumb isn't comfortable.  The Hoage thumb grip is more sloped.

Having tried a demo unit in the local shop (no grip) I ordered one with the grip - it's not terribly comfortable without, especially if you have largish hands.

I ran into exactly the same issue. When I went to buy my D-Lux 8, I was thinking that I didn't want a hand grip—at most I'd get a thumb rest that would insert into the hot shoe. I wanted that clean design! But when I tried it in the store, I found myself thinking that without a grip, the camera was actually too small for my hands. I didn't see how I could comfortably hold it while also manipulating the controls with the same hand. So I ended up with the Leica handgrip.

How about someone posting images taken with this camera?

The collection of images I went to when I was considering the D-Lux8, and then after buying it, is a Group on Flickr.  There is a fair amount of dreadfully over-processed shots, but there is also some really nice work.  When looking at them, be sure to note the f-stop.  It is important with this camera.  I also have an album on my account -- not trying for high art, but rather probing the limits a little.

I never noticed the small thumb rest change on the 100 year edition, but the pictures show just that. The few YouTube reviews didn't say anything about that. I liked the looks so went with the 100yr instead of the standard edition, but if I had noticed this I might have done what you did and go with the standard one. Mine is coming on thursday. I guess I'll see how I like it without. Someone said the match technical CL thumbs up works on a DL8 and with out the rest on the camera it might be perfect. I have the CL one sitting around and will try it before deciding.

I'm still trying to decide on the grip. I've liked the Leica version on the Q and Q2. I had a 3rd party one on the CL but the battery door cutouts aren't always comfortable if your hold still puts a finger under the camera and I don't mind removing a grip to get to the battery. When I had a LX100m2 I never used a grip but it had a slight one on the body and the DL8 doesn't. On the fuji x100VI and XE-3 I actually liked a half case better than the small rig grips for them.

Not sure what to do... Leica now wants $180 for their grip. JJC is only $30 and one with a wood grip is $64 for prime days.
