Driften Posted July 11, 2024 Share #21 Posted July 11, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I liked the Q type 116 when I had it but found 28mm too limiting and later bought a Q2. The Q2 feels more streamlined in its usage and being able to crop more made it more useful. For what you are talking about you missed a really good used Leica... The CL digital. You have your choice of L mount lens for it and it's a light camera that won't be left behind as often. I liked CL better than the Q type 116. The only reason I didn't keep it was lack of IBIS and not enough lens options with OIS at the time. My hands shake and need some sort of stabilization when going over 50mm. ianforber Posted July 11, 2024 Share #22 Posted July 11, 2024 I’d go for a Q2. I’ve had one for about 3 years and often think I take better pictures with it than with my M11. Yes, the depth of field isn’t the same as with a 50mm or 75mm lens wide open but it is, for me anyway, better than I expected. It’s quite bulky for an EDC bag though so if you can live with that compared to the smaller form factor of an M plus a tiny lens, I’d go with a Q2. If you don’t like it I suspect you wouldn’t lose much money trading it in. Curve ball. What about the new D-Lux 8 when it becomes available?

My hands shake and need some sort of stabilization when going over 50mm. +1 Let me be the third one to recommend a used CL or TL2 + EVF (020) which could also be used on the M10 series. Because your first motivation for a change is the weight of your gear vs image quality, the Q series provides a big improvement but you will sacrifice a lot of the flexibility which you had available. You mentioned the need for a second camera with 50mm lens to make that clear. I moved from Nikon years ago because I wanted smaller and lighter gear. My M9 is still great as a compact solution, and much more suited to me with a tiny 35mm Summicron or Summicron 40C than the fixed 28mm Q lens. It is even more compact than the Q series. Of course the Q2 or Q3 will be great at 35mm or 50mm, but larger and not ideal for me. Even when I take a Macro Elmar 90 M + Summicron 35mm + M9 with me, the combo is as compact as a Q would be. And more imortant, the M9 with 35mm mounted fits in my coat pocket! Later, I added the TL2+EVF. Like you, I sometimes want to have a "lazy" day and want to rely on AF and very fast PP. The TL2 has a more modern sensor and it is easier to get very good results SOOC. Also, it allows for zooms, macro and longer tele work. It is only later that I bought a simple M-L adapter and used it with my Summicron 35. I found out that it makes a very good 50mm setup that is even more compact and light than my M9 when I carry the EVF separately. For this reason, I decided it is even slightly better than a CL would be and this at a much lower price.... So, I would recommend to consider buying a Leica TL2, if possible with the EVF, because it really makes it easier to use in bright sunlight and for longer shutter times. Then, maybe start with a Voigtlander 35mm or even an old user Summicron 35. Of course, to benefit from the AF you need a TL or L mount lens... I chose a cheap Lumix 20-60mm which makes a nice light combo with the TL2 30-90mm eq. It is reasonably compact compared to the Q series or your current gear, and has the benefit of the zoom. Maybe you can try this out before selling your Canon? It will not break the bank and you would not lose much money when you want to sell it later. You can decide later about the move to either Leica M or SL for when you really want to spend the time and energy to carry more expensive gear, but I can assure you that the results you get with the Summicron 35 on the TL2 are very close to what I get with my SL(601) or M9.
