Clinical Adjective (Without Emotion)

  • Lacking emotional expression or feelings
  • Displaying no character or warmth

It’s all about your state of mind. The 135 format is a compact sensor compared to medium and large format cameras, even when considering full frame. This issue can become more pronounced if you’re not a qualified post-processing expert.

Its completely meaningless term and phrase.  Its just a means for a self important person to belittle another.

Often times, it is the only way for an inferior mind to invalidate the work of another person without having to actually NEED to explain why the work is "inferior".  If you wanted to get "technical", you can use the phrase "too clinical" to describe most works by the original Weston.

Honestly, actual self experience, the original Weston made some really good, high quality images of bathroom fixtures and clay pottery. Really good stuff. Better then I have seen used for front page advertising of "pottery collectors quarterly" type publications.   But strangely all of his fame comes from his human portraits and landscapes. His beach ones, attrocious to MY eyes because i cant make out more then 30% of the objects.. over lapping detail, no contrast between anything.  Sort of like wearing "glaucoma glasses" at the prank store.

As much as it is, its more interesting to ask the question why the semi nude women found in the photographic works of William Mortensen are called "erotic" and "pornography", by the followers of Adams, who devote their life to promoting and defending the works of Sally Mann and Sturges,  despite detractors merely following state and federal statues on child pornography.

In my opinion, the medium on which you view the image has a large impact on how you will perceive it. How it is perceived is a matter of taste but at the end of the day, the content of the image is always what makes a good photo, not the MTF. We are a niche group who enjoy these details. Technology will advance and today’s ‘clinical’ lenses will become tomorrow’s vintage ones. Personally,I just love taking pictures so enjoy all types of lenses for different things. I’m after a ‘clinical’ 28mm in M mount if anyone can recommend one 😁
