Got message from Leica about whether three interested used 30-90mm have  new generation focus motor.
One with series number earlier than 4305100 is old generation. Two with series number later than 4305100 are new generation.

Not sure if this can be generalized. Take it with your own judge.

It is simple enough to send the serial number to Leica, they have been very good about letting you know if any service has been done to the equipment.

The only autofocus-related problems I have had with a lens seemed to be more related to the actual mechanism (the drive?) than the motor itself, which spun without moving anything. So the motor is not the only thing that could fail. Nonetheless, It was replaced when the lens was sent in for service.

Follow up, I just got my 35mm CS lens back (it already had a new focus motor) and asked them to clean the dust out of the interior of the lens. They took it apart, cleaned the lenses, finished the CLA and returned it to me on goodwill!

Leica has its problems like any company, but when they do well, they do really well and cement relationships for life.  Happy Leica customer.
