New B&W Magazine?

Following an interesting debate on B&W magazine within the APUG forum ( http://www.apug.org ), I wondered how many of you would be interested in the following idea...

Just for the record I used to buy B&W magazine, but stopped when too many digital articles started to appear. Now I do shoot both digital and film - generally digital stuff for my 'commercial' side, and film for my personal work. And yes, I work with both Photoshop and wet process.

But, I'm really interested to read about the analogue side of things (especially as most photo-mags appear to be very equipment based rather than image based, if you see what I mean).

So, how's this for an idea...

I'm not in a position to put together a magazine that you can sit on the train and read, but I am willing to setup an 'e-zine' (don't you just hate this jargon!) with articles written by YOU (and me too occasionally!). I would only stick with analogue and here's what I would like to get if you are up for this...

1) equipment reviews - whether it's a Leica M7 or a Kodak Medalist, Gandolfi or Voightlander.

2) processing - whether traditional silver halide or alternative processes

3) film - I'd be interested to know about how processing chemicals affect the development of film, types of film and how they relate to older / newer lenses.

4) techniques - using the zone system, panning, macro, etc...

5) gallery - showcase of images for 1 person per month / week / year depending on interest levels

I'd already started 'A Simple Guide To Improving Your Photography' at A Simple Guide To Improving Your Photography, but if you people are up for this then I'm happy to create something specific to the world of B&W.

You can reply here, or email me at... davidvickersphotography at yahoo.co.uk

Several people have already mentioned that they prefer the printed page (and so do I to be truthful), but there may be a way around this...

If we can get a series of articles together, then I could essentially bundle these up and create a magazine (based on those articles) via lulu.com.

Please, please, let me know what your thoughts are - if there's enough interest then we can make a start! From the responses on APUG and private messages I've received there seems to be some interest in making this happen - so would this interest anyone here? Would anyone want to contribute, read it, see particular articles? Would you prefer a paper copy or are you happy with the electronic version?

Cheers,

David.

I am hoping to aim this magazine towards various traditional processes, with feature articles from various artists/photographers - as well as the odd equipment review (new or old) and processing techniques, etc.

Can I take it that there is a little bit of interest then jonathan_r ?

OK, I couldn't wait, I was like a kid at a sweet-shop! I've started the online part of the magazine over at Creative Image Maker - all we need now are some articles!

So, you may want to quickly nip over there and check it out, but if you are interested in starting up this new project to create a magazine for the traditional image-makers then I'm going to need some articles. If you'd like to be a regular contributor, let me know and I'll set you up as an author.

For now however, if you've any articles or images please email me in the first instance at davidvickersphotography at yahoo.co.uk and we'll make a start.

David - which B&W magazine? There are three by that title I know of - a US, UK and Australian magazine, all of which are available in the UK. The UK one is aimed at beginners/general hobbyists; the US one is aimed at fine-art photographers, and the Australian one at fashion/contemporary art photographers. Same title, but they're worlds apart.

[bTW - if you haven't tried it, you might like the US magazine. Very different format: fantastic photography, high production quality, and aimed at expert photographers / printers. You can get it from Borders.]

I think it is a great idea! In the UNITED STATES film photography seems to be more underground compared to digital. Us film users in the US have numerous film websites

to go to on-line, But lack a 100% film publication in my area anyway. (Orange County, CA)

On this web site and many others "we" have many supporters, but Lack the capitol for the

ability to produce such a magazine publication witch I know would do well in my neck of the woods.

Well 'underground' we are on our way! The magazine now has an online presence and I've started scouting for contributors (I'll write a few myself too!).

I am intending to have a paper copy available - initially through lulu.com and then depending upon interest I'll try to get it available to bookshops, etc.

Spread the word - there's a new magazine in town and it's going global :-)

Cheers,

David.

Thanks Mark - if I could do that, it would be useful; naturally I'll put a link to your blog and credit you with pictures, etc. If you ever feel the urge to create a new article just for Creative Image Maker that would be great too!

Many thanks,

David.

If you want some more insight information in Europe's main photo, film and chemical manufactureres and typical background of some companies, how to start to test a new film a.s.o. I could give you some valuable info about these items. The whole analog industrie has been reconstructured the last years and it is still going on.

Especially some smaller companies have penetrated the market with specialized films like orthochromatic, technical pan, high resolution micro films, infra red films a.s.o.

How is the world from a fine-art photographer. Special printing technique (Split Grade) and these kind of things.

best regards,

Robert

Robert, thank you for that offer, it's much appreciated and I'd certainly like to take you up on pretty much everything there! I'm going to write a beginners guide to testing films to decide upon on the EI, but I'd welcome some more information.

I'd love some articles on companies out there who are delivering these specialised films and I'd also be very interested in articles on special printing techniques.

There's a thread over at APUG about this magazine ( at New B&W 'Zine...? - APUG ) and of course the main site at Creative Image Maker too.

Welcome on board! You can send me articles to davidvickersphotography at yahoo.co.uk. All articles / images will, of course, be credited to you and we can put any contact / web details in the article too if you would like.

Many thanks,

David Vickers.

Hi all,

Thank you! Your support for this idea has been fabulous and I'm just hoping that I can provide you with the sort of framework you'd like to see in a community magazine. Several of you have contacted me and also taken the time and trouble to check out the website at Creative Image Maker. We're also gaining members over on Flickr too and everyone is waiting to see what happens on the 15th January when the first real article goes live.

If you want to contact Creative Image Maker you can - I've set up an email address for the magazine and you can send your comments, articles, images, requests or whatever to creativeimagemaker at yahoo.co.uk (obviously replace the "at" with the usual "@" symbol).

Thanks to all of you - the future's black and white ;-)

I'd be really grateful if you all would pop over to the site and leave your comments about the decisions facing us with the paper version of the magazine.

You can leave comments at Creative Image Maker or you can email creativeimagemaker at yahoo.co.uk and leave your thoughts there.

Cheers,

David.

What an amazing week it's been! I figured you might be interested in an update on what we have achieved in one week. The site itself has been visited over 750 times with over 1,200 page impressions. I'm sure they're not all my wife, so someone out there has been looking. Thanks to both of you ;-)

Last Friday it all kicked off and this site was started with a grand plan to start a magazine catering for the traditionalist photographic community. The first posts started and people started to get interested; the RSS newsfeed was set up and people have been subscribing to that.

Since then, we have had several offers of articles - thanks to Scott, John, Cheryl, Drew and others. Thanks too, to Rodrigo for his offer of help.

You can currently contact me at creativeimagemaker at yahoo.co.uk, but that's due to change now that a dedicated web address has been secured. This means that I can now setup a dedicated web site and thanks to 'Mark', who through his generous donation has allowed me to get the web hosting we need to see this through. That's Xmas taken care of ;-)

This does mean however, that the first article, due to go online on the 15th January may well appear on the 'proper' site, and I'll be working hard to realise that goal. It would be nice to get it right from the start, rather than have to move everything over later on.

As noted on a previous post, we've also got an ISSN for the magazine, which we can use for the PDF and paper copy, and I'm still looking to distribute through Lulu.com to ensure the widest possible coverage. In fact, I've already started to piece together the magazine, working on styles, fonts, layout and so on.

That just leaves me to say a final 'thank you' to everyone, whether you've just popped along to the site to see what it's about, or you're making a contribution. Remember, this is all about providing the community with a means to see what's going on, who's doing what and hopefully teach each other various techniques along the way.
