An incredible image and Strand to go to that extent for purely candid images.

I’ve seen many of his prints in person, including some from museum archives that rarely get exhibited.  Curators are sometimes happy to set up private viewings. I also have most of his first edition books, some signed.  Jeff

She, whomever she was, made it possible for Strand to earn kudos for the image, and made it possible for so many people to earn money from her: Strand, magazine and book publishers, book stores, essayists getting published, and so on. Almost by definition the woman never saw her image and there is likely no model release signed by her. Was she therefore exploited? As a photographer one needs to always be aware that the camera confers no rights, it does add to one's ethical responsibility. There are of course many good reasons for taking and publishing so called 'street photographs' and in many cases it is rather impossible to obtain consent before printing, exhibiting or publishing an image. War time photographs are a good example of that, but one also needs to remember that Kim Phuc burned and did not win a Pulitzer prize, the photographer, Nick Ut did. The photograph did serve a greater purpose and did help end the atrocities. And Nick Ut did help save her life.
