I bought the thumbgrip (Leica one) and it annoyed me because with thumb pressure it would tend to gradually slide back out of the hot shoe. I just found myself constantly pushing it back in which was a real distraction and spoilt the experience of using the camera. Stopped using it. I also bought the handgrip which works well but it annoyed me that it is not arca swiss compatible. I often use a tripod and the Q3 is the only camera I take on holiday do I got the RRS L bracket which is brilliant and really well thought out. Yes it adds bulk to the camera but I don't mind that as I find holding the camera is more secure with a thumbgrip - and you can always remove it if you want to. The RRS L bracket also has a QR fitting underneath and I use QR type shoulder and hand straps so this makes my system very versatile. I also tried the half case but this is too bulky and restricts the use of other accessories. I have put an Alphaguard Skin on the camera body to protect it from scratches and that works brilliantly.

My point is - I don't think any of the Leica accessories have been very well thought out and frankly cost too much for what they are. I will be selling my Leica handgrip, half case and thumb grip as a result.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try them, just that they didn't work for me.

Maybe a slight tolerance difference in the Leica thumb grips.  Mine is tight and takes some effort to remove from the hotshoe.  Maybe try another sample if you like the thumb grip?

I have a Q2.

Having spent silly money on just about every available Leica Q2 accessory when I initially got the camera, the following is a list of what I ended up using and consider necessary:

  • Thumb grip (permanently on the camera)
  • Hand grip (permanently on the camera)
  • Spare battery
  • Nitecore travel charger
  • Wrist strap (dependant in what I am doing)
  • Neck strap (dependant in what I am doing)
  • Small camera bag (day trips)
  • Larger camera bag (for travel)
  • Photo editor - I use Capture One

I also have a Gitzo Travel tripod, full size tripod, some filters (UV / ND / Polarising / Pro Mist) an SF40 flash and a couple of spare SD cards (I only use 64gb - swapping when full to minimise corrupt card losses). The full size tripod and flash are almost never used so arguably are a waste of time for me. I already had the full size tripod however.

Perhaps the retaining springs are loose.

On my Leicas I use:

  • OEM or B+W UV filter
  • Hama smart snap filter cap (I don't use any lens hood)
  • Hama microfiber bag
  • Kalahari magic pocket (microfiber envelope cloth)
  • OEM thumb rest
  • OEM half case
  • matte screen protector
  • spare battery
  • Kingston Canvas React Plus SD card
  • the original neck strap; I like it because it is rather slender and flexible allowing to use it also around the wrist

No need of a special, bulky camera bag. Wrapped quickly into the cloth or put into the thin microfiber bag (or both), the camera is perfectly protected to carry around in any messenger bag or backpack.

Have fun!

My Thumb Grip was also not as tight as I would prefer, so I added some layers of black isolation tape under the grip. Now it stays tight, but can also be removed.

Interesting but you really shouldn't have to do that with a Leica accessory - especially at that price point.

I'm also new to Leica since last Tuesday and own a Q3 in addition to my Sony a7iv and some lenses. Love it so far.

I added

  • Leica original thumb support
  • B+W UV Filter for the lens
  • Peak Design connectors in black for my several straps from them which I use for all my gear for years
  • Lexar 250 mb/s, 128 GB which I use with my Sony too without any flaws
  • maybe there will com another battery for the Q3

That will be all - maybe a grip

My Q3 has not unloaded the battery in the six weeks it has been in my drawer. I have the Connectivity set to Off.

Same here.  Had my Q3 6 months with no drop in battery level overnight or a week (even if I occasionally forget to turn off the camera).

I only have the Q2 but my battery has run down to 45% in ~2 months since I last used it (I’ve been using my M11 instead). I have my connectivity set to whatever is the top level (Performance?). That’s about the same as the M11 when I switch to using the Q2 for months at a time.
