Tom001 Posted June 12, 2024 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I now have four lenses: 45, 70, 100, and 180. If I take all of them with me, it will be too heavy. Considering the travel burden, which ones should I take most appropriately?
Advertisement Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Hi Tom001, Take a look here I'm traveling to New Zealand in August, which lenses should I bring?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
epines Posted June 12, 2024 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2024 Depends how and what you like to shoot. People? Landscapes? Street? Other? Personally, I'd have the 45 and 70 with me every day. I'd bring the 180 and leave it in the hotel room or the car, only to be used when I wanted to capture a mountain peak or something like that.
dritz Posted June 12, 2024 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2024 Exactly what epines recommends. So, in towns you have the 45/70, and mountain hiking you would have 45/180. Consider the APO close-focus adapter for the 180. Pretty cheap now, and really stunning!

Pieter12 Posted June 13, 2024 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2024 Will you be traveling by car? How strong are you? How big a bag are you willing and able to carry around? Is there a secure location for your gear if you need to leave something behind for the day or when you're at dinner? No matter what lenses make sense to have at your disposition, remember the practical aspects and maybe whittle it down to just a couple of lenses or a zoom. Stuart Richardson Posted June 14, 2024 Share #6 Posted June 14, 2024 Honestly, this is why M cameras exist...do you really want to carry an S camera and two or three lenses with you across the world and on your shoulder all day? The last time I went to NZ (was born there actually) I had an S006 and an M9 and planned to be there the whole month. I took the M9 with a 35mm and a 75mm lens. I feel like it worked very well. Looking at lightroom, I used the 35mm at a 5 to 1 ratio compared to the 75mm. If it must be the S, I would likely only take the 45mm and 100mm...or even just the 70mm. But clearly if it is 3 lenses the spread should be 45,70,180.
Stuart Richardson Posted June 14, 2024 Share #7 Posted June 14, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) P.S. It need not be an M...I just think you might enjoy the trip more without having to lug an S camera and lenses around, and might feel freer with a smaller camera. But if you think that will bring you the most pleasure, you should do it. Same goes for if you are going to work on a project. But if it is just a family vacation you might start getting sick of bringing it with you everywhere.
Eclectic Man Posted June 14, 2024 Share #8 Posted June 14, 2024 Are you taking a tripod too?
01af Posted June 14, 2024 Share #9 Posted June 14, 2024 Well ... New Zealand is two islands (okay, two main islands). So maybe you should bring at least two lenses.
AmbientLightNZ Posted June 23, 2024 Share #10 Posted June 23, 2024 As someone who lives in New Zealand - the 70 is a no-brainer. I'd also bring the 45. The 180 would be handy in some situations if you're traveling in the South Island but I'd prefer to save the weight, shoot with the 70 and crop in. Einst_Stein Posted June 23, 2024 Share #12 Posted June 23, 2024 (edited) I just came back from Scandinavia. According to my previous trip of the same place, I carried C645 45-90mm on S3. One of the major consideration is to avoid changing lens. Besides, I also have Hasselblad SWC (38mm@ 6x6, film) with me. They are roughly 30-90mm on S3 that I dont have. It seems 30-90mm does not have high reputation, but at this level, nothing is bad. It depends on how you compromise, especially, if you are likely yo use small aperture most of time. I assume New Zealand has similar style of landscape, but I am not so sure. Edited June 23, 2024 by Einst_Stein
