ALScott Posted May 23, 2024 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) This could be all on me as I am new to Leica but my Q3 doesn't do this. When just sitting in a chair reading the manual and focusing around the room today the camera either would not focus at all as in no movement or if holding perfectly still after focusing it would just bounce in and out of focus. It was in AFc and Field. Should I be able to hold down shutter button or joystick and the camera focus as I move it around? Also, sometimes the focus frame just stayed white, not green. Was using 24-90 at 24 and 90 and it happened at both focal lengths.
Advertisement Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 Hi ALScott, Take a look here New SL3 problem with focusing maybe?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 24, 2024 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2024 If you are in Field and AFC the focus will certainly jump around when you move the camera. Start in AFS and use half-press.

When I moved the camera around sometimes it did nothing.
jaapv Posted May 24, 2024 Share #4 Posted May 24, 2024 The camera will be focusing constantly in AFC and you have no control over what it is picking up in Field; holding still? Even the slightest movement will pick up another spot in the subject. Basically AFC is for changing focus distances and moving subjects.
ALScott Posted May 24, 2024 Author Share #5 Posted May 24, 2024 I guess what I have to get used to is the "constant" focusing. These never stop whereas my old cameras would focus, stop, focus, stop with each move. As you say, these are constant. Just went out and shot some cars going by, cat, dog, etc and all in focus. Qwertynm Posted May 24, 2024 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2024 Auto Focus continuous is what AFc stands for. I don't know what cameras you owned in the past but that's been like that for ages now.

Photoworks Posted May 24, 2024 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2024 there is also a PRE FOCUS option, if the camera is on it will focus without the need to push a button. I usually have it off, sometimes I put the camera in the bag without turning it off and would hear the AF motors grinding.
ALScott Posted May 24, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted May 24, 2024 I know what "continuous" focus means but this is more continuous than my old camera, an EOS 6D. I was sitting inside and not really using as intended I guess but it just seemed odd to me and again you have to realize what I am coming from is very different. I am sure any camera that age to an SL3 or any new camera would be very different. The Canon had like 13 focus points? All AF now is very different, I assume, and it was different than Q3 in the setting I was trying it in, a dimly lit room with very bright and dark areas. Probably in some cases it's better to always use AFs. The manual tells you what all of the features are but not necessarily how they are best used or work best in a given application that's why I posed the question to actual users. jaapv Posted May 24, 2024 Share #10 Posted May 24, 2024 My basic setting is AFs and center point or spot and the camera only comes off to AFc or other fields when there is a reason. The thing is to figure out the settings that work best for you.
