Hi guys,

Does anyone knows how to track down the production year starting from the serial number of an SL2S?

I found a great deal for a used SL2 that apparently has some problems that would be fixable and covered by warranty if the specific body has been built in the past 3 years but the seller does not have box or receipt of the original purchase.

I have the serial number though: 56284**

Thank you in advance!

Ask Leica Customer Service to be sure. However, normally proof of purchase is required.  Also inquire whether guarantee applies to a second owner in the USA. Otherwise  the camera has to go to Germany in that case, and repair times can run into six months. Personally I would walk away, given the potential trouble.
Or have the seller sort it.

Thanks jaapv

Debating if it makes sense or not too. The price is so teasing that it could turn out to be a great deal (or an horrendous one).

The back screen is saying "System Error" and from what I understand, could be that the camera is bricked or a stock shutter or something as easy as a firmware update.

I can't figure that out till I get the camera shipped though...

There’s a “Walk away” right there regardless of the issues with the camera. There are plenty more out there with provenance

Coral Climb,  First, welcome to the forum where you will find a good number of highly experienced photographers who will offer their sage advice to include myself.  Second, I second Jaapv's sage advice.  This is a "walk away" or "run away" camera "deal".  I most highly recommend you either walk or run regardless of the "warranty".  Ther a lot of excellent certified Leica used SL2 or SL2-S cameras out there from many Leica Stores or authorized Leica dealers.  I highly suggest you keep your AMEX card safely in your wallet with this "deal".  r/ Mark

PS  I sent you a PM with some recommendations to help you.

Wise. You would have been buying somebody else’s problem I bet that the seller knows darn well that he is looking at a repair bill far north of 1000$ and months of waiting. Otherwise he would have had it repaired himself and sold it for a normal price. Guarantee is almost certainly impossible without proof of purchase. Maybe there even is an estimate by Leica out there
