Hey, folks!

I had the Q3 out for shoot Tuesday.  It was an active scene...the Blue Angels Navy demonstration team.  I know...the Q3 is not that camera.  But, I thought I would have some fun with it and I did.  I can't tell you the number of times I selected my "action" profile only to find the camera switching back to "cancel" in between targets.  What any I doing that the camera will just not remain on the selected profile until I make another profile selection.  Oh, trust me...I know it's me doing something...not the Q3!!  Ha!!

Because a profile stores virtually everything that can be set, then changing virtually anything will cause the chosen profile to be overridden (and that's why you see the cancel icon)

Even changing the display bars using the centre button will cause the profile to show as being overridden. I'm afraid you'll just have to live with it, but have a play and you'll see what I mean.

It would be much better if Leica did what some other manufacturers do and just shown an indicator in the chosen profile icon to show that the selected profile has been overridden. Some makes even highlight the modified fields in the menu system so that you can see what's changed. Unfortunately, with the Q3 you have no idea what profile you were previously in and what changes you made.

On the plus side, having a profile system that records virtually everything gives you total configuration control.

That is SOOO helpful, Corius!!  And, what I just learned from you (if I understand) were I to make changes (aperture setting, shutter speed, etc) and THEN select a profile, that profile remains the selected profile until I make a yet another change with the profile engaged.

Example:  Set aperture at f2.8 and shutter speed at 500 and then choose my "Action" profile, the "Action" profile would have remained active all day for the Blue Angels shoot.  If I moved the shutter speed to 1000, I would at that point have to reselect the "Action" profile to have benefit of all my "saved" settings in the profile.

How am I doing?  Ha!

Not quite  I wrote "virtually everything", but that doesn't include Aperture, Shutter Speed or ISO. If you change any of them then the Profile doesn't change (which is really what you would expect)

( I've just checked and If you move ISO from Auto to a fixed value that does affect the profile, but Auto Shutter speed and Auto Aperture do not.)

This is SOO helpful Corius.  Can't thank you enough.  In following your testing, I did find exposure compensation does also effect the profile much like ISO.

I am learning more about the changing profile syndrome from this thread. Mine changed today, and I now realise that it must have been due to my changing the display bars with the centre button! I did not realise why I was cursing, and was wondering what setting had been changed inadvertently. (The reason I made the change was simply to see the edge of the frame on playback. It has no effect on the settings for taking the next photo!)

I just experimented, and the good news is that if I change the display bars back to where they were, the profile goes back to being the one I initially set. This is excellent news!

I wonder if it's possible or even desirable for Leica to make this change...once you have selected a profile, it remains selected even though you make small temporary adjustments to it "on the fly"?  These small adjustments would be made perhaps to fit scene or subject without wanting to actually "save" them to a profile.

A thought...what are yours?

I am not sure how that would be achieved. I would be quite happy to have the inadvertent change of profile signaled on the screen, rather than having to aelect the menu button to find out.

I have a Q2 rather than a Q3 but I’m wondering whether they behave differently. If I select a profile, eg profile 2, it is shown on the first summary menu screen. If I change parameters such as shutter speed or aperture on the fly it still shows as profile 2 on the menu screen. If I change from Auto ISO to a fixed ISO, the menu screen changes to show only the image of a torso without a profile number on it - demonstrating that I am no longer complying entirely with profile 2. If I revert to Auto ISO, the menu changes back to showing the torso with a 2 superimposed on it, letting me know that I’ve gone back to all the settings as saved in profile 2. All on-the-fly settings are retained when switching the camera off and back on again. I can see whether or not I’m using my profile as saved by checking the menu screen. 

Is that different in the Q3? Or have I missed the point entirely!

Exactly the same on the Q3.

I would like to see that on the main screen, as a constant reminder in case I inadvertently change something crucial — as I often do.

I think I meant the main screen - the one that pops up with one press of the menu button

That’s what happens. If you change one of the parameters that are saved as part of your profile, it will show the circle icon with no number in it. If you made a mistake you can scroll along the profile icons strip until you arrive at the profile you were using previously.

It’s exactly as I want it and how it’s always worked. Is this different to how @reynoldsyoung Q3 behaves?

By main screen I mean the one you see when you are about to take a photo. The screen that is shown every time you half push the shutter button.

Yes, the same on Q2 and Q3.

That’s the EVF and not the LCD. When you press the “Menu” button you get the LCD.

With respect, I mean the big screen on the back, the information on which can be duplicated on the eyepiece. 😀
