The closest I walked up was about 10 m in North Luangwa I was in a Land Cruiser standing up in the seat. He was about 2 meters from the lens. I did run into an older male and his three wives while walking with an armed ranger. I got a few shots off before the ranger moved us to a safer spot. He wasn't worried about this old boy but rather one of his wives who disappeared into the long grass. Just something to keep the old heart pumping... SL2S/100-400 shot at 400mm Welcome, dear visitor! Printmaker Posted May 23, 2024 Author Share #2 Posted May 23, 2024 Thanks I found the lions I saw mostly hunted at night. They digest and mate in the day. Though I photographed a cheetah hunting in the midday sun. She was too fast for me to get a running shot but made her kill about 10 meters from the Landcruiser. It was something to see. http://www.barefootinkauai.com Welcome, dear visitor! There's a collection on my portfolio site: http://www.barefootinkauai.com But here's a few more. All were shot with a SL2S and 100-400. Some of the earlier images on the site were taken in South Africa and were shot using a M10 and 135 Tele Elmar or by my wife who uses an Olympus OME1 and 40-150 sometimes with a 1.4 TE. Printmaker Posted May 24, 2024 Author Share #9 Posted May 24, 2024 In all we photographed 82 lions during our last trip to Africa. But there were so many more big cats. Most everything was shot in either the Serengeti or the Maasai Mara. It is the same ecosystem but the Serengeti is in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara is in Kenya. We were very lucky to have booked a driver, Ombeni, who had worked with several film crews and knew exactly where to position the Land Cruiser. He works for Easy Travel out of Arusha in Tanzania. We would leave well before dawn and return to camp after dark. I would highly recommend him if you ever want to photograph lions. Easy Travel works with Tortilis Camps who provide luxury tents and wonderful food. The contact for Easy Travel is a very patient and friendly woman by the name of Voice. We hired another driver in Kenya but he paled in comparison to Ombeni. We’re planning our next trip to Namibia and there I’ll be driving a Toyota with a camper back. We did something similar in South Africa a few years ago and got some great shots. Be careful though, Africa is addictive.
