Hi Everyone,

I hope you are doing well,

What are the sharpest wide lenses for SL2? It is fine if it is not from Leica or not L-Mount lenses

I have Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH but not happy at corner sharpness. Not sharp as in the middle.

Thanks for your assistance,

Wesam

Compared to the SL 16-35, the 14-24 sigma/leica zoom will have better corner sharpness. A lot of primes will do better. The obvious ones would be the APO SL 21,  28 and 35, and pretty much any of the Sigma dg dn wide primes.

16-35 is quite a wide range. Is there a particular focal length you’re most in interested in? Also, what is your subject distance? Are you looking to shoot at widest aperture?

I’ve done some controlled side-by-side comparisons for distant objects between a bunch of L-mount lenses including Sigma 14-24/2.8 DG DN and 16-35 SL, 28 APO SL, and Sigma 24/3.5 DG DN. From my testing at equivalent focal lengths and apertures, the Sigma 14-24/2.8 DG DN and 16-35 SL performance are similar. It may not sound impressive if you want better corner sharpness than what the 16-35 SL can offer but for price the Sigma 14-24/2.8 DG DN is amazing bang for the buck. It’s as sharp wide open at f/2.8 as it is stopped down by 1-2 stops.

I think the only way to get anything sharper for a wide angle is to go with either the 21 or 28 APO SL. If you’re willing to stop down to f/5.6-f/8, the 24/3.5 DG DN is as good as the other high end zooms.
