Reggie Posted November 10, 2020 Share #41 Posted November 10, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I also tried to look for the softness wide open at F1.4. It's there relative to F4 but that's going to be the same for any lens. And frankly, my portrait subjects often wish for a bit of softness 🤣 Both images cropped to 200%. This one is taken at F1.4. I hadn't noticed the softness at 1.4 but I did notice the loss of contrast if the lens hood wasn't on. Are you shooting with the hood on or not? Here's an into light image (hood on) which came out with what looks like good contrast to me. TL2 Sigma 85 1.4 at ISO100 1/1600s F1.4 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I use a hood, always. The contrast is good in your shot. I you'd move the angle a bit towards the sun, it'll lose it. That's what my lens does. I only face this issue when there is a ceremony right in front of the Sun's direction. My Fuji GF110, Canon RF 50 1.2 help out very well in those scenarios. Easily fixable but something to note.

Just saying that this lens is softer in comparison to my Voigtlander 40 1.2 at 1.4 and the Canon RF 85 and 50 1.2. I don't compare it to the Fuji GF 50R of course. Again nothing that hinders my shooting experince or photo quality. I also feel that the lens is not optimized for sharpness with distant subjects. Close subjects are way sharper. XRayGuy Posted November 10, 2020 Share #44 Posted November 10, 2020 Darthaddie, thanks very much for your extremely informative posts. As a fellow SL2/50R owner, can I ask how you view the GF 110mm vs the Sigma 85mm? Not a fair comparison given the price, I know, but I am in a situation where I need to pick up an 85mm-equivalent lens for some shoots I have coming up. The summicron 90mm was an option but is so much more expensive, I initially wondered if the Sigma would suffice on the SL2. From your posts I am guessing that you favour the GF 110mm? (The SL2 with the 35mm summicron and the 50R with the 110mm would be a viable, if heavy, option for me for example rather then getting the Sigma)

The GF is probably the most amazing 85 equivalent I have used. And I have used almost all the best ones in FF category. It’s a bit heavier and pricier but you won’t regret it. In IQ the only thing that comes close is the Leica 90. I don’t know why but the new Sigma doesn’t produce the Leica colors/IQ I love. At least not for me. But as I said, I am saving for the 90 summi. Until then...
XRayGuy Posted November 11, 2020 Share #46 Posted November 11, 2020 Once again, incredibly helpful. Thanks so much to everyone on this thread for taking the time to post, and special thanks to Darthaddie for answering my question! I think I will probably pass on the Sigma an save for the GF 110mm and summicron 90mm.
Alan Friedman Posted November 12, 2020 Share #47 Posted November 12, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Great to see additional feedback on this lens. I remain a fan of this optic. It has met my advance expectations for sharpness and contrast seems good on backlit subjects. I also have not noticed much in the way of distortion in exposures that might display it. I can't offer much on focus as these new Sigma lenses are my first foray into autofocus since buying some Nikkor lenses for my D1x. ;^) I have lots of manual focus Leica glass, many of which I love very much. The Sigma dg dn offerings work very well for me in size, weight and performance. I would need to exhaust the creative potential of these lenses before moving to the larger, heavier and more expensive modern Leica autofocus lenses. The examples below are shot with the 85 1.4 dg dn on a Sigma fp. A couple of shots at f1.4 (these are discards - not the keepers from these shoots, but show results with brightly backlit subjects). P1505 Posted January 24, 2021 Share #49 Posted January 24, 2021 Seems the FP gives lovely colours. Does the in camera correction work on the SL 601? If not does a suitable Lightroom profile now exist?

Ivar B Posted January 26, 2021 Share #52 Posted January 26, 2021 It is interesting to read that some users complain of softness wide open, while some are perfectly happy. I have watched some reviews on YouTube and some argue that the lens is razor sharp wide open and in one test said to be wide sharper than the Sony 1.8/85mm. I haven`t tested mine enough yet to be able to form a firm opinion. Makes me wonder that is going on. User errors? Sample variation? Personal preferences? Same story possibly with the Apo-Summicron-SL 2/35mm. Professional testers rate is as very good, but not up there among the best. Leica users are short of words describing its performance. I have now shot over 8000 images with the Sigma over 15+ weddings. I am pretty sure there is something going on which I cannot pinpoint. Here are 2 (untouched) images from the same shoot. It was an overcast day but no fog. The family photo looks really low in contrast and foggy where as the couples photo is much better. The Sigma simply loses contrast in a lot of situations and its hard to explain. I have no such issues with my Canon 50 RF 1.2 / Voigtlander 40 1.2. I even rented a Leica 90 summicron. I understand the cost/quality difference but I did not have any such issues over 3 wedding shoots with any of the lenses. Also noticed that in high contrast situations where the subject is dark/sun behind the Sigma will not focus at all. Other lenses will focus easily. Welcome, dear visitor! To my eye, is seems that there is a loss of contrast and sharpness for everyone to see. I don`t know, but I would not be surprised if there is an issue with your lens. This is most definately not what it should be. For what it`s worth, Dxomark described the Sigma 1.4/85mm DG as the best perfoming 85mm ever - even matching the Zeiss Otus:https://www.dxomark.com/sigma-85mm-f1-4-art-lens-review-new-benchmark/ The new DG DN is supposedly even better. Such a verdict is not supported by your results, is it?

And don't get me wrong, when it works its awesome. See another untouched image. No loss of contrast here. While the previous shoot had almost the same weather and it just didn't provide great results. I shoot fully manual so I know a goof up is not possible there. Though DXO Mark says its the best lens, we must note that they test lenses in controlled conditions for obvious reasons. Weddings are totally out of control and a good lens for me would be that works great in most conditions. Welcome, dear visitor! P1505 Posted January 26, 2021 Share #56 Posted January 26, 2021 This is what’s holding me back from buying. I keep reading two stories - it’s either the best lens since forever or has something wrong with it. I can wait.

I still wonder what is causing this. Time permitting, I will try mine tomorrow and maybe provoke some flare. I don`t know if you witnessed Sigmas CEO presenting this lens, and one key point in the presentation was that they had used every means available to reduce ghost and flare, and he repeatedly stated how much he admired the competence of his so called "Ghost Busters" (if you reall the movie). Ivar B Posted January 26, 2021 Share #59 Posted January 26, 2021 (edited) This is a very thorough test published in the German version of the forum. Unfortunately, it is in German (and I speak German) and 4 lenses are compared on a high resolution 61 MP Sony camera: Sigma DG DN 1.4/85 Sony G 1.4/85 Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 Sony 1.8/85. Centre sharpness - the Sigma is a very clear winner and is razor sharp. The Sony G 1.4/85 loses out due to very heavy CA. Corner sharpness - more even - but Sony wins. If you want maximum performance - get the Sigma or the 1.4/85 Sony. Edited January 26, 2021 by Ivar B

If performance is the ultimate aim, the testers favour Sigma DG DN and Sony G. Considering the price advantage also, the Sigma comes out as nr. 1. But - I will test a little myself as well. I have friends who used this on a Sony and love it. Just wondering could it be an issue with the L Mount versions. 99% or 100% of the reviews are from Sony mount users. Maybe my SL2 and the Sigma are a forced marriage. Lol.
