Half-Handed Posted December 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can anyone in the UK recommend someone to do black and white film processing by post? The guys I use have just "lost" a couple of rolls of mine (I'm sadly too idle to develop my own) and I was curious to see if anyone had any suggestions. If you use a chromogenic film like XP2, you can get it done almost anywhere, since it will go through the standard C41 line. My local place in the high street does me nice clean negs, plus a set of proofs. These films scan well, too. David
rob_x2004 Posted December 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted December 2, 2007 Why do people us XP2 instead of a c41?
andybarton Posted December 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2007 XP2 IS a C41 film
earleygallery Posted December 2, 2007 Share #7 Posted December 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Snappy Snaps chain will develop normal black & white film, its an 1 - 2 day service, but they do C41 in an hour.
rob_x2004 Posted December 3, 2007 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2007 Yea I know it is Andy, I am wondering why people use XP2 when you can have your "raw files:) " in colour? XP2 just seems an odd perversion, but I am sure there is good reason for using it, which is why I asked.
andybarton Posted December 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted December 3, 2007 Because the way that XP2 and other C41 B&W films records the light is different from the way colour film does? Ilford et al wouldn't have gone to the trouble and expense of making such films if there were not a clear advantage.
Mark Antony Posted December 3, 2007 Share #10 Posted December 3, 2007 The 'advantages' of XP2 and other chromogenic films are that you can process them in 1hr minilabs, they have a wide latitude 50-800 EI without process change and the biggie – they have no grain. I know they have dye clouds, but generally less than say Tri-x. When XP1 came out Ilford sent us info how to process along with densometric proof that it wouldn't damage our C-41 hand-line, in this info they called the film 'grainless'. Also nowadays if you scan you can use some of the dust removing utilities that can't be used with conventional film. That said I like conventional best, I always found it easier to print with a more natural (to my eye) tonal range. Mark
