rattling/vibrating sound and feel during firmware update

I just bought a used APO SL 35 in a camera store and at home slapped it on my Leica SL3. A quite audible rattling sound and vibration started while the screen stated firmware update. After, I was told to restart the camera. By starting the camera again it shortly appeared again and now seems to work fine (after few minutes testing so far). Is that vibration and rattling sound normal?

I have a few APO lenses.  Almost all of them make a faint whirring type of sound when the firmware is updated.  My 50 APO makes a very different sound - kind of like you’re describing - a vibrating, grinding type of sound that is much louder than my other APO lenses.  My 50 APO sometimes appears to be not as sharp as my 50 Summilux-SL, which makes me think there may be something wrong with the focus motor.  I’m probably going to send it in for service.

Thanks for your quick and kind reply. I have had the SL2-S last year with the 50 & the 35. If I remember correctly both made a similar noise but in much lower magnitude. Hmmm.. I guess I test it the next few days and have a closer look on AF performance.

My uneducated guess is that it is self-calibrating the AF motor and/or aperture.

My 75 APO makes this noise every time I upgrade the camera firmware. Worryingly the last time I did this, the noise suddenly stopped and the lens reported an error and died. Was gone more than 4 months being repaired at Wetzlar. None of my other lenses make this noise, including two other APO primes. Very worrying and in my case I will not be updating firmware again unless I need the added features.

Were you getting inconsistent critical focus results before it died?

The lens just kept hunting and would not lock on focus. Then an error appeared, the diaphragm blades closed down and it froze.
