RexGig0 Posted February 24, 2024 Share #2 Posted February 24, 2024 (edited) Interesting. Internal reflection, or flare? I would not rule-out an atmospheric effect on the sunlight. Now and then, my Summilux 50 ASPH will flare in a way that I have yet seen. Edited February 24, 2024 by RexGig0

There is a visually apparent flat-topped shape, on the sunlight reflecting from the water.
NigelG Posted February 24, 2024 Share #5 Posted February 24, 2024 Looks like flare plus internal reflection (the dark band at the top) - see this post by adan. 2
Olaf_ZG Posted February 25, 2024 Author Share #6 Posted February 25, 2024 @RexGig0, @NigelG thanks. I thought about both options but can still not decide what it is. I have shot many images that day, and this one was the only one with this phenomenon.

I would agree - this seems the most likely explanation.
Bikie John Posted February 25, 2024 Share #9 Posted February 25, 2024 Do you have a filter on the lens? That can cause funny effects like this. And whether you do or not, these things will often only happen at very particular angles/positions - if you can see it on a live view image just twitch the camera slightly and watch it zoom around like crazy! So it doesn't surprise me that you saw it on one shot but not the next. John

I didn't mean to suggest that LV might cause the problem - just that using it might show vividly just how erratic and apparently random flare can be. pgk Posted February 26, 2024 Share #12 Posted February 26, 2024 It looks like flare (ie unwanted light) probably as a result of light reflecting off one of the curved glass/air interfaces. You are shooting against the light with the light source (the sun) out of frame but over-illuminating the lens sufficiently to bounce excess light around inside it and eventally some of this has caused an unwanted reflection. Such flare can be precisely angle critical which is why it only shows in the first image.
