I think it's a delicate machining to do this... and on the original mount is much more risky than into an adapter lile the SM/BMs... but if on the M8 the Rokkor brings up the 35 frame, I'd say one can get accustomed... M8 frame are conservative... and with a little of experience you can estimate well the framing.

The 28mm RokkorM lens was made for the CLE. It brings up the 35 frame on Leica M's. Does anyone know if it can be converted to bring up the 28 frame on the M8.

I love the M8 but did not realize that I might have to buy a new 28; that's for the future.

Jay,

The Rokkor-M 28mm is a superb lens. I used to have one during my Minolta CLE days and used it on the CLE as well as on the M6 at the time. When used on the M6, I pushed in the preview lever all the way towards the lens mount just before exposure for correct framing - this brings up te 28mm frame lines.

A competent technician should be able to convert the lens to bring up the 28/90mm frame. It is however, not very simple. The bayonet lug which brings up the frames has a varying length, depending on which frame it is supposed to activate. The 35mm lug is the shortest, while the 28mm one is the longest. This means that your technician would have to add material to the Rokkor's lug to activate the 28mm frame.

I have seen this done by drilling and tapping right behind the lug and attaching a small screw in that position. The screw can than be filed to the shape of the lug and to proper length. A good technician can do this in less than an hour. You can than also have the mount machined for 6-bit coding, apply the coding yourself and enjoy the lens to its full potential.

From your profile I can't tell where you are located, if in the US I would highly recommend Don Goldberg - here's the link: DAG Camera Parts . Don could perform both operations, including the 6-bit machining. Another competent technician in the US is Sherry Krauter - link: Sherry Krauter.com -- Home of the Golden Touch.***

A simpler alternative would be to just have the mount milled for 6-bit coding and push in the frame preview lever for picture taking. This would also activate proper in-camera corrections because the correction is influenced not only by the coding, but also by the frame line position.

Best,

Jan
