Hi. The L1 is still to come out in July and I am eagerly waiting for it.

Does anyone know if Leica has any plan to release their own version of the L1 (presumably called digilux 3)?

3 years ago Leica annouced the D2 before Panasonic announcing the LC1. But it's not the same this time. I am worried that Leica is not going have a D3.

Well if Leica doesn't make one but the probably will, you will just have to buy the pany, all sounds pretty straight foreward to me.

Just for the record - a little bird told me that the Digilux 3 and the 4/3rds Leica version of the L-1 MAY be two separate cameras. In otherwords there may be a new Leica lens/camera line - the "D" alongside the "M" and "R"" - with interchangeable lenses....and a separate, fixed-zoom top-end digicam line - the Digiluxes (Digiluxi?). And of course the D_lux and C_Lux lines.

"Never assume..." as the saying goes.

Thanks adan,

I use the LC1 and love it so much that I wish I've bought the D2 instead.

I really hope there will be a equivalent version of the L1 by Leica (if the price difference is not too excessive).

But i'm not sure whether I should wait for a Leica's version or should I go ahead getting a L1.

If I choose to wait then I could possibly be waiting for months before it becomes certain that there will be no 4/3rd D3.

Andy,

I was also reading about it, however, I personally hope that the Digilux 3 will base on the L1 because of its clean design with some additional Leica-only enhancements like interchangeble screens and tilt monitor.

After being quite excited about the L1 as an upgrade to my D2, I'm now starting to rethink.

The size of the L1 with that new Vario-elmarit lense, is starting to cause me to re-consider.

I really enjoy carrying and using my D2, but many times think this is the maximum in weight and size that I want to carry on my travels. I have it in a nice size waist belt.

I really do hope the D3 can evolve into Leica's CM-zoom digital family, and become even smaller than a D2

Particularly as Leica already have the Pro top-end covered with DMR and M8, and now the semi-pro covered with the L1.

I'd really like to see the D3 have either the Kodak 7.5 or 10MP sensor with the non-interchangeable Vario-Summicron for the reportage style of user, maybe even surprise us with a Vario-Summilux.

Dugby: Don't burn all your eggs in one basket (or some such):

There is already a 25 f/1.4 (50mm equiv) on the 'roadmap' of coming lenses for the L1, and likely there will be more fast prime lenses once Leica introduces their version (something lacking in the Olympus line at least in the normal-to-wide lenses). Think "35" f/1.4 or f/2 and "28-24" f/2.8-f/2 or thereabouts. Or even the dpreview preview where the L1 is shown sporting an Olympus 50 f/2 macro (100mm equiv.)...pretty tiny with that lens.

Which will also be much more compact than the 14-50 zoom.

Andy I do most of my work with a Oly/11-22 plus the D2 there is a huge difference in weight and the Oly combination is bulkier I doubt that the 14-50 on the L1 will be smaller.

p.s. the D2 earnt me six figures again this financual year, not bad for a 2000 dollar investment including accessories

Unfortunately fast primes with OIS and AF will not be compact either. If I'm going to carry a big@ss rig, then I'd go for my R gear. The Digilux line is meant to be a compact camera, and I don't see anything compact about the D lenses.

The question is that f1 lens for the 4/3 format. It will be smaller than the Nikon D1 I own at least.

Not necessarily. Something like a 25mm f/1 would require tremendous amounts of correction, and so anything Leica standard would be a behemoth.

In anycase, it would not be anywhere close in size and possibly performance to a 50mm f/1.4 that would give a somewhat equivalent result.
