As a reminder, the official list of Luxus Leicas in the 48000 series is from 48401 to 48441. So 33 copies.

Thanks, Pierre

If I were interested in this camera, which I am not, I would still check the details of the delivery with the Leica Archive. If a I Mod C camera with the SN 48442 exists, it has to have gone somewhere. I would also ask if they can look up the repair register for that SN. I have reached no conclusion about the validity of this camera. I noted it recently when I received an email from Breker about the auction. Next thing, your post here caught my eye.

Engravings on the crowns of a lens barrel are very difficult to make by a forger because the metal is very hard. But have we missed another detail? And yes the insole is not gold plated on this "Leica Ic Luxus", whereas on all the original Leicas Luxus known to my knowledge they are. I explain it well on my website in the details of an original Leica Luxus.

But what is surprising is that behind certain numbers on the official register we do not see any writing. for the gold plated sole it is also not a certainty but those that I saw had it.

Maybe I missed it, but have you contacted the auctioneer, which is a well established business, which is usually regarded as reliable?

Yes William, it was them who kindly and quickly sent me the photo of the lens with the engraving of the number. But once again they are not positioned on a 100% original Leica Ic Luxus. Thus leaving the free choice to everyone to have their own opinion.

Looking again, the listing itself looks OK as it does not come down on one side or the other. They also make it clear that this is not on the earliest official list. There might be some argument about the headline name, though. Anyone bidding on this camera should do a bit of 'due diligence' before placing a bid. The net question is whether it belongs here https://collectiblend.com/Cameras/Leitz/Leica-I-Mod-C-Luxus.html or here https://collectiblend.com/Cameras/Leitz/Leica-I-Mod-C-Luxus-(replica).html

The auctioneer is leaving it to the market to decide on the value of the item.

This Luxus Ic sold today for the modest sum of 150,000 euros!!!. If we add sales fees, that’s about 23%. Total 184,500 euros. For a camera not evaluated and assessed by an expert, this is a record.🤔.

I was watching the auction today and what I said on 21st February was what happened. Notwithstanding some misgivings, I was not as unhappy as Pierre was with the actual listing for the item. What happened was that after about 50K there seemed to be two bidders on for this item. One appeared (I was watching online) to be on a phone and the other seemed to be in the room. They went blown by blow to add another 100K to the price, until one of them dropped out and the bidding stopped. As for whether the winning bidder thought it was real, or just wanted the item, it is difficult to say. Very often when you see a situation such as this one, the persons doing the bidding are experts acting on behalf of the persons who might be paying. My advice is always to ask an expert for an opinion when bidding such large sums. This truly was an example of the market setting a price for an item. While we are as wise as before on the origins of this item, we now know what price the market has set for it.

Here is Leitz's response regarding the sale of 48442.

Dear Pierre,

Thank you very much for your e-mail. We could not find any records of this camera. Here the comment from our expert: It is likely an original Leica. But whether it is also an original "Leica Luxus" is more than questionable. Obviously some of them have been retrofitted, even at the factory.
But there are also good to very good forgeries.

Leaves us none the wiser. I presume that they also looked at the repair register which would have detailed any subsequent work done on the camera. If I were going to spend that amount of money on camera which had doubts about it, I would seek a written report from someone like Ottmar Michaely who could strip down the camera. I still think that the listing went as far as it could in describing the camera. I have to assume that anyone bidding those amounts would have taken advice on the matter. Are you going to add a 'footnote' on your site about this item?

I just sent you a link to this, Pierre. The set comes with expertise by Ottmar Michaely. I presume this one 'checks out' with you.

This Luxus Ia 48438 is well listed in the official list and a good description with the expertise of Ottmar Michaely can only reassure potential collectors.
