JonS Posted December 17, 2023 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I've recently purchased a Q3 and have some queries about personalising the camera functionality that I'd appreciate some help with. Essentially, I'd like to turn the camera into as simple and pared back a manual camera as I can. I'd like to assign back button focus to the F2 button but have so far been unable to change this button to do anything other than toggle between photo and video modes. Is it possible to reassign this setting? If it's possible to assign back button focus in this way then can the F2 button be used to momentarily find focus if the lens is put into manual mode? Can the shutter release button be set to only take a photo? I do not want it to have any other functionality, such as auto focus. Many thanks, Jon

David Wien Posted December 17, 2023 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2023 (edited) I dont mean to be rude; but have you actually RTFM? I found that it needs to be gone through more than once with camera in hand. 😃 Seriously, it is probably the best camera manuals I have encountered, and is written in real English, without any talking down to the user. LocalHero1953 Posted December 17, 2023 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2023 If I want the Q2 to be as simple and pared back as possible (i.e. not even autofocus by back button), I turn the focus ring, aperture ring and shutter dial to specific values. Job done. The Q concept is about dials and rings, not firmware and button settings
Le Chef Posted December 17, 2023 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2023 I’m puzzled by the fact that people buy a $6,000 camera and appear to not RTFM. How can you possibly extract any meaningful value from it if you don’t know how to make it work?
JonS Posted December 17, 2023 Author Share #6 Posted December 17, 2023 Yes, I've read the manual and I'm well versed in using manual settings on many cameras, both film and digital, over many years. If anyone on this forum feels more generous with their experience of using the Q3 then it would be great to hear from them. Thanks again, Jon

I have never ever used back button focus on any camera. The F2 button will do a lot of things apart from toggling photo/video: see p.58 of the user manual. 1b. I think you can only set the F2 button to one function. (It sounds like you are asking it to do autofocussing!) 2. If you are not in Autofocus mode (as set by the focus dial) the shutter button will just take a photo. David

Though I may not have been so forthright in my answer as some here 😂…as a photographic dealer I am always amazed at the people who buy a camera and are back in a few days with myriad simple questions. So often when asked their response is ‘I don’t read manuals’. Many have the idea they should be spoon fed the answers by those who have read the manual 😡 Edited December 17, 2023 by bobtodrick
