I'm waiting for a Q3, so while I wait I thought I'd get a Q (Typ 116), which has a recent Leica service and a warranty for a year and which was at a reasonable price. I've read the manual and enjoyed some of the many Q photos here. I've not used a Q before, so is there anything I should be aware of? I should get the camera in the next couple of days.  Looking forward to it.

Also interested in people's experiences with this camera.

  • Stokkie changed the title to New to me Q (Typ 116)

With the original Q there was a chance of getting dust on the sensor that would enter through the mic and speaker ports which weren’t well sealed.

It was advised to put a small piece of tape over these ports…unless you shoot video in which case you need these available.

I did it to my Q which I’ve had for over four years.  I advised all my customers who bought Q’s (we are a dealer in Canada) to do likewise.  About a dozen cameras…a number of them heavily used by pro’s.

None of them have had dust issues.

I've had my Q for 6 or 7 years in all environments (windy, dusty, rainy, seashore, mountains, rainforest, arctic) and carry it with me nearly every day.  I do not have those holes taped over, and I've not gotten dust on my sensor.

The first thing to do is to read the instruction manual, thoroughly.  If one doesn't arrive with your Q you can download a PDF file online.  Google the UK Leica site and download it there.  If you want to get a head start on it, begin reading it before you q arrives, but it's best to have the camera in hand when reviewing the manual.

Once you are using it, show us your photos.

Good advice, Stuart and encouraging to hear about the lack of sensor dust. Will post some photos when I have the camera.

And yet plenty of people clearly still use the original Q.

Just sold another print yesterday from my current exhibit.

Shot with a Q.  Other than gear head photographers the viewer doesn’t care what camera you used.

Enjoy you pre-loved Q 😃

That's good to hear! I'm sure I'll enjoy using my Q as working within the limitations of classic if slower equipment brings its own pleasures.

Just had a note to return my loaner Q, as my Q3 can be picked up. Brilliant, looking forward to it after many weeks 'training' on the Q, which is a very nice camera too.

Excellent news, Stephen. I'm sure you will enjoy the benefits of the Q3. My Q was delivered this morning, so I'm looking forward to set up and first photos.
