Gus-R Posted November 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good afternoon everyone, I'm searching online about the R 70-180 2.8 APO and would like to know your thoughts about this lens. I'm not shooting sports or wildlife in movement so I'm considering between the 90-280 or the 70-180 with an SL. Has anyone of you compared those 2 before? Thanks

davidmknoble Posted December 8, 2023 Share #3 Posted December 8, 2023 @Gus-R, I have both of these lenses and they have very different purposes. The R lens is wonderful for film work and on the SL system with the R-L adapter. However, the 90-280 is a super fast autofocus lens, it doesn’t change lengths when zooming or focusing and is weather resistant like the SL system. I love shooting both lenses, but for anything fast or in bad weather, the SL 90-280 wins out. I happen to also shoot the R6.2/R8/R9 and it is great with film. It is plenty sharp throughout the zoom range and fixed at 2.8. A superb lens. Hope this helps…

In the meantime, I added the SL 24-90 and the 90 F2 to my set. I'm still debating between 70-180 and 90-280, but for myself, I'm leaning towards the Autofocus one. However I would love to have the manual focus one in my R9. Thanks again
