The 50 Summarit 2.5 is essentially a half-stop-slower V5 Summicron. I have both and find the images equivalent, but I prefer the handling and smaller size of the 2.5 Summarit

Erwin Puts says much the same thing about the performance of those two lenses from f2.8 down, Tom, but the OP is asking about the APO Summicron; not the v5.

Just FWIW and for anyone with five minutes to spare and who might be interested in Herr Puts' comments with regard to the Summarits;

Crowmagnon,   I have used both Leica 50mm lenses with my workshop clients to teach them the optical effects of lens rendering.  Frankly, one would be hard pressed to visually pick which photograph was taken with each lens.  Pippy's post above leads you to a very good essay regarding the Summarit lens line.  If you shoot color and need or want very high optical resolution when used at widest aperture opening with a small rangefinder lens, then a 50 Apo Summicron might be the best choice for you.  Then again, the 50 Summarit either 2.5 or 2.4 versions, will render in most excellent way too.  The good news you have choices.  Here are two links to give you ideas how the two lenses render.  IMO, both are superb.  Last, I always point out to my workshop clients, at the end of the day, it is the content of the photograph that is paramount, not the expense of the camera or lens.    r/ Mark

Try: 50 2.5 https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=371&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32

Try: 50 2.0 https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=366&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32

PS  Both lenses are excellent choices especially if you can find a used copy and save on depreciation.
