stunsworth Posted November 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know if the integral lens hood on an APO 90mm can be extended if a B+W 55mm slimline 486 filter is fitted? Thanks
Advertisement Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here 90mm APO and B+W slimline filter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted November 18, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 18, 2007 Steve, there's no problem at all with a Leica 55mm filter, so I cannot imagine a B+W filter will be any different.
stunsworth Posted November 18, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted November 18, 2007 Hi Mark, thanks for the quick response. The problem with the slimline B+W isn't the fact that it's not a Leica filter, it's that the outer part of the metal ring has a larger diameter than the standard filters - this prevents the lens hood on a 24mm Elmarit from being mounted for example - I was wondering if the extra diameter would foul the lens hood on the 90mm lens. marknorton Posted November 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 18, 2007 Steve, there's 2mm clearance all the way round with the Leica filter.
stunsworth Posted November 18, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted November 18, 2007 Thanks Mark, that should be enough.
farnz Posted November 18, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 18, 2007 Steve, I have the APO 90 and a B&W 55mm 486 filter (but I'm not sure whether it's the slimline - how d'you tell?) and there's no problem at all. The thickness of the filter's rim plus thread is about 7mm and the thickness of the rim is about 4mm. With the filter in place and the hood extended there's a good 2-3mm clearance between filter and hood all round. BTW, the pinch-on cap also attaches with the filter in place. Pete. stunsworth Posted November 18, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted November 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pete, the easiest way to hell is to look to see if the front of the filter is threaded. If there are threads then it's not the slimline version.

I didn't think it'd be a mortal sin - or whatever - so I looked anyway and there is a thread so its the fat-line(?) filter, which would be 'worse case' than the slimline. Thanks for the info. Pete.
