I will be traveling to the Caribbean this year for work and have been pondering this question.

What do you see in beach and tropical compositions?   What elements of the image do you consider essential?

I would like to be much more thoughtful and prepared.  Including a human seems easy, but how do I capture the essence of a place?

Well... every beach has sand, water, and sky.  There may be other elements... people, boats, wildlife.   It's how you arrange those elements and the lighting that determines how interesting your photo(s) are.  This is one of my favorites from Fraser Island (K'gari,) QLD  Australia.

That boat in the center holds the eye and keeps it.  It immediately has me asking questions ...

Your image has me thinking about finding brighter subjects or at least brighter colored subjects for the center.

It breaks several rules of composition, but it works.  I think it works because, even though the boat is centered, it's well-lit and all of the leading lines come back to the center.    Full disclosure, it's a two-shot, stitched pano taken with a 5mp Olympus E1 in 2006.

I have many beach photos that I consider rather good, but I have never given any conscious thought to elements, light and composition.  I just see something that I think will work, and then shoot.
