ghflow Posted November 3, 2023 Share #1  Posted November 3, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) With the introduction of the APO-Summicron-M 35mm, Leica said they would make lenses with a minimum focus distance lower than 0.7m. Almost three years later, we have some more: 35 Summilux, 50 Summilux, and 28 Summicron. I wonder what lens Leica will update next. The 50 Summicron is the oldest design(30 years old and does not even have an aspherical surface). However, completely redesigning a lens is much more expensive than updating the existing ones. Plus, Leica has proved that they can take an existing design and add the close-focusing feature. Thus, I'm curious if they will update existing lenses. There are a lot of other candidates: the Noctiluxs, the older APO-summicrons, and the ultra-wide angle primes. What do ya'll think?

SiggiGun Posted November 3, 2023 Share #2  Posted November 3, 2023 I vote Apo-Summicron-M f2.0/90mm ASPH.
f8low Posted November 3, 2023 Share #3  Posted November 3, 2023 (edited) I don't think recent type of updates would apply to longer lenses that have minimum focus distances bigger than 0.7 like the Noctiluxes or the 90mm Summicron. Since the updated lenses get quite a bit in diameter, those lenses where size and weight are key features seem unlikely, like the 28mm Elmarit. One could count the 35mm & 50mm Summicrons in that category as well but I can imagine an updated version. To me the 28mm Lux seems most likely... Here, the offered 'new look' would also be quite dramatic, plus people like and love that look from the Qs. FrozenInTime Posted November 3, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted November 3, 2023 21mm Summicron CF FLE would be useful. Summilux is too large and the Super-Elmar is on the slow side.
RobW0 Posted November 3, 2023 Share #5 Â Posted November 3, 2023 Not sure that it means anything, but the APO Summicron 75mm was taken off the Leica USA store website a couple of weeks ago.

The focus throw on that lens is already rather short, so if they add close-focus and improve on the current twitchiness the lens would doubly gain girth and weight. Edited November 3, 2023 by FrozenInTime

My comment was more in the vain of the comments about some of the APO lenses rather than just close focus.
rajkerkar Posted December 9, 2023 Share #8 Â Posted December 9, 2023 Hi everyone. I personally, would love to see the legendary 50mm M APO Summicron similarly updated to a closer MFD
