Hi,

I have posted my pictures once and again in several threads, some are my favourite themes.
I am worried of duplicates in a thread.

As time goes by, I have quite a stock of pictures. And as time goes by, now I am not any more very very sure of not duplicating post a specific picture.

It makes me look so stupid. Or forgetfulness really starts . .

The question is:

  • Would it be possible to, in my personal page 'my attachments' to have a search function, to quickly check that picture by name? Or check in a thread if that name already exists?  Example: "does LR018470 exist", showing a list?

Thoughts on implementation:

  1. A function could be to have a drop-down on the top to search on name. In  the personal page 'my attachments', where there is now 'sort'; and to add: 'search by name'? Or maybe even smarter would be, to, when a specific thread is found on the right, to allow a function, 'show pictures from this thread'?
  2. Another function could be, that when a picture is dropped in the grey area of a post, that a pop-up shows that this specific content was posted before on that thread.
  3. Thirdly, the user can be nudged to use a link to existing content instead of storing the same picture again. Such a function in general might reduce the stored content, as maybe someone might post the same picture in various threads - I do not know if there are considerable savings in space this way.

I know that any such function requires a new access, but the main index is there in the background; and a problem is that at some time pictures were not stored by their original/posted name, so finding duplicates gives false negatives, but who cares.

Regards, albert

Not exactly an answer to what you asked, but here is how I have solved this: In LR, I have created a collection of folders for each thread I export images to on the forum. And every time I export an image, I drag it into the respective folder. This way I can very easily see which images I have used previously. Moreover, if I hover my mouse over one of these folders in Grid View, images that are inside it will be highlighted with a white border, so it's not even necessary to open the folder to see if an image has been used.

Of course, it's a big job to get started with this if you already have 123 pages of images that have been used in the forum. 😉

Thanks Frame-it, this is new to me, not that bad, and even with 256 pages there, the last 10 pages would be fine to scroll through; and it loads rather fast.

But still that is good for intentional re-use;

not for preventing un-intentional reuse in a same thread. (and abuse of other members fun)

Maybe, we could add:

      4. in Other Media, have the possibility there to sort by Thread (starting with list of last so many threads to select from)

i think a simple* way might be to get an alert saying "this file has already been posted in that thread" or something like that.

*simple for the end user, not  @LUF Admin who has to program it!

Indeed as the file name is likely changed to a unique ID before being stored making it difficult to compare when the user is uploading an image. maybe if the original file name is also stored it would make it easier but who is to say the forum member won’t change the file name before uploading!

Ian, That is quite true, I admit. For instance, because my C1 output is labelled as -C1; and sometimes I add a lensdescriptor (35V1 for instance, afterwards). So name is no foolproof thing. The original name is regularly (I don't see a pattern) omitted, and the picture becomes image.jpg

And Ray, no, not a sin to duplicate.

But - you know its all psychology, but now I'm afraid that I , well, show I don't remember things and make a bad impression, stupid me like said in post1.

We do get older . . . 😙

But look at it differently: wouldn't this be a feature premium members would like?

Artefact example from uploading: (I must be at fault somewhere in the process)
