I've only had version 2 for a month. It's my first 50mm. I'm very satisfied. Has become my favorite object.

Very easy to tell the difference.  v1 has a crazy design where it looks like it is made from lots of different mis-matched pieces and the focus ring is a strange metal knurled thing.

That's the v1 of the M mount version. I also have the v1 of the earlier ltm version that is styled after the Summilux v1 of 1959 or so. Optically I think they are identical, but the ltm is aluminum body and doesn't seem as rugged at the later models. I also have the chrome version of the M v1 (shown above) and mechanically it is very impressive and solid. The focus ring is indeed strange, but it works very well if you get used to it. I use the ltm adapted to my M5, where the size feels right, and results are great/

v2 on my M5 and pics taken w it on HP5.  Mine is the single coat SC version.

v1 and v2 are different optically.  From cameraquest.com:

v1:
