MindsEye Posted September 17, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, Has anyone experienced their Q3 getting hot? I went into my camera bag to grab my Q3 and it was quite warm. The body and lens both felt like I'd left in direct sun on a hot day. Only this was indoors in an air conditioned house in my little Think Tank Retro 5. The camera was off. I turned it on and nothing happened. I disengaged and reingaged the battery and then it fired right up and was operating fine though still quite warm. I noticed my previously full battery was now at about 50%. This is both baffling and distressing. I suppose it could have happened before and I never noticed it because it had already cooled down when I went to use it. Just curious if anyone else has had this happen? Thanks, Joel Edited September 17, 2023 by MindsEye

bobtodrick Posted September 18, 2023 Share #3 Posted September 18, 2023 As a photo retailer I would advise you not to store the battery in the camera til you sort out whether the battery or the camera is at fault. It’s well documented…lithium batteries have caused numerous fires and have been known to explode. My first advice would be to try a new battery. I’ll set the other one aside and send it in.

Qwertynm Posted September 18, 2023 Share #6 Posted September 18, 2023 perhaps your camera was in standby and still connected to the FOTOS app? Do you have any way to check if that was the case? I find that when connected to the phone the camera gets unusually warm at times.

Do you have any way to check if that was the case? I find that when connected to the phone the camera gets unusually warm at times. I will ignore Fotos app and bluetooth/wifi, when I receive my Q3. I hardly ever have bothered with apps in order and would never consider editing on a phone. So hopefully this issue would never arise. However if it is the battery, I would only ever stick with official batteries and even then I never charge them, with the charger unattended. Convenience, is a double edged sword. Quite often we are suckered into convenience only to find other issues. I have never thought wifi/bluetooth is more than useful on rare occasions. Removing SD card into a reader whether one has an iPad/iPhone/Mac or Windows is no big deal and is a lot faster. USB-C cable from camera to computer could be even faster. So for me I don't have a need for FOTOS, many will disagree and that's what is good in life we can all have choices, unless the politicians remove all choice as some would like. Vel Posted December 4, 2023 Share #8 Posted December 4, 2023 I had this happen with a brand new Q3 (v1.3 firmware). It's due to connecting the camera to the FOTOS app and enabling geotagging. I connected to the camera in the app then closed the app thinking the camera would disconnect from my iPhone but noticed my phone felt very warm and the FOTOS app was draining the battery after about an hour. I then force closed the app and it continued draining. I then checked the Q3 and it was very warm in my bag with 50% of the battery gone. I then put it into Eco mode for communicating with the FOTOS app and that didn't help either. Ended up turning off geotagging and communication with the app completely and now it's fine. My1stLeicaCam Posted December 4, 2023 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2023 I forgotten to turn off my camera and left it inside my camera bag. When I retrieved the camera from the bag, it’s really hot,not warm. Then I noticed the switch is on but camera in standby mode(lcd not on). When I pressed the shutter button, the lcd turns on. It’s like around 5mins in the bag.

jaapv Posted December 4, 2023 Share #11 Posted December 4, 2023 If the camera is in standby mode it can switch on and off all the time inside a bag which will make it run quite hot and run down the battery.

Wellsyboy Posted March 1, 2024 Share #14 Posted March 1, 2024 If you have it linked to the FOTOs app it can switch on from the app even when the power switch on the camera is in the off position. You can switch off "wake up" in the app.
