lencap Posted September 17, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings! I have the SL2-S and most frequently use the Leica 50mm f/2.0 ASPH "bundle" lens on the standard strap. In the past I had the 24-90 SL zoom, but couldn't get it to balance well on the standard Leica strap. I sold the lens, but I'm considering buying another. To make it work I'd like a strap that has better balance and weight capability than the standard strap that comes with the SL2-S. The model number I'm considering is LEICA 19591, single strand, black color. My understanding is that the SO designation is designed for the SL body. Any comments about the strap, and what lenses you typically use with the camera, is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! I use a similar strap, the Artisan & Artist silk straps which I have on all of my Leica's -SLs as well as M cameras. They're strong, comfortable, flexible & balance well. I can't see that it would be too much different with the Leica rope strap, except that I would think that the rope strap wouldn't be as supple & soft as the silk strap? I carry heavy lenses with these:SL2 &Canon 400mm f4 SL2-S &Sigma 60-600mm (please click on image for better res.) Welcome, dear visitor! Highly recommend the Leica COOPH double rope strap over the single for the SL cameras regardless of the lens size. I find them more comfortable as well as more stable/secure. Even more comfortable than any rope strap are the leather link-type straps from Rock n Roll.
lencap Posted September 17, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) Michael - If I saw your mounted lens pictures before I sold my Leica 24-90 Zoom, I would probably still have it! That's a LOT of glass to carry! I'm also a bit surprised that the lens' tripod mounts are rotated 180 degrees to the camera tripod mount. Is that because of the adapter, or do the lenses normally mount like that? With my older Nikon F film cameras the large lens tripod mounts always were aligned with the built in camera mount so I could better balance the total weight. I've heard good things about the Artisan and Artist straps, but hadn't considered them. Thanks for the suggestion. By the way, the Reporter Edition colors make me jealous! HD - I appreciate your comments about the double rope strap. I hadn't considered them, thinking they were too bulky, but looking at their website I noticed that they use different diameter for the double loop. I haven't seen the Rock n Roll straps in person, but they very attractive on the website. Thanks for the recommendations. robb Posted September 17, 2023 Share #5 Posted September 17, 2023 I have (4) 126 length cooph rope straps on my two sl2 and two sl2-s. I also have a 5th one on my x2d and a 6th one waiting on a Q3. Perfect length. I am not a fan of the shorter ones. they are the greatest straps to me. I wear them cross body. I can’t comment on how the APO lenses balance. Didn’t really ever think of this. But all my apo’s and the 24-90 and 90-280 work great with them. For the zooms, you might like the double straps, but no real issues with the single ropes I use. Abram Posted September 18, 2023 Share #6 Posted September 18, 2023 I'm using the shorter single-strand COOPH strap on my SL2 and it's perfect for my needs. I only have the Sigma 50mm f/2 lens to use aside from a couple M-Mount lenses so I find it to be just right. I also use a Q2 paired with the SL2 so I find the strap to be just right for slinging over my shoulder or wrapping around my wrist.
Ken Abrahams Posted September 18, 2023 Share #7 Posted September 18, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the rope straps I have four of them for SL2, SL2S, M10M and M9M. When I configure them I use the material loop to latch on to the strap lugs of the SL's. I dont like using the metal rings to fix the straps because over time there can be wear of the lugs. The M9M uses the rings because of the nature of M camera set up for straps. I bought a small rope strap and didnt realise it. It's too small even for the M cameras as it sits up on my chest and furls constricting. The straps are not cheap and like all things that are associated to Leica the prices keep going up every year. I like to wear the camera low enough to sit on or just above my shoulder bag. The straps are just long enough for that.
Jean-Michel Posted September 18, 2023 Share #8 Posted September 18, 2023 You could also look at https://www.harrybenz.com/shop/the-brogue-sl I have that strap – Harry made a custom length for me. I use it cross-body. It is very comfortable. The 'hinge' design works perfectly.

The cameras sit in a custom made tray on the seat next to me in my Land Rover, the up-turned tripod mounts serve as a useful handle. I don't use a tripod, I've always used a bean bag (filled with coffee beans, the smell stimulates my senses especially on early morning outings... 🌞)

I travel a lot into the highlands in my Discovery, and my gear often lives in the passenger seat, but I really wish I had a better/safer way to organize it there. Curious to see what you came up with... As for straps, I have tried rope straps and don't get it at all. I still use an old, uncool, discontinued padded suede strap from Tamrac. Just have never found anything more comfortable or functional, though they look like you are an 80s dad.

If you can imagine it's a padded rectangular tray, the sides are slightly higher than the camera, it has 2 eyelets on the back end where the seat belt fits through & secures it to the seat. I've also made a lid/cover for the tray. Best Mike
