algrove Posted September 6, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted September 6, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just watched an Overgaard 50mm video and he infers that the new less expensive SL 50/2.0 ASPH focuses faster. The problem is that he does not precisely mentioned the slower lens name. Could this new lens focus faster than the more expensive APO 50/2.0 SL lens. He mentions he owns the 24-90 lens so perhaps he is comparing the new 50 focusing to that lens. Just not sure, but wanted to hear if anyone has the APO 50 and the new 50 ASPH. Which one focuses faster? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 Hi algrove, Take a look here Does new 50/2.0 ASPH focus faster than APO 50 /2.0 SL lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wdshuck Posted September 6, 2023 Share #2  Posted September 6, 2023 Yes, the new SL 50 ASPH definitely focuses faster than the 50 APO. The 24-70 also focuses faster than the 50 APO, I haven’t used the 24-90 though. The 50 APO definitely has a special rendering though, portraits with it are just beautiful. I would happily spend the money if my kids moved a bit more slowly…
Kreeshp Posted September 7, 2023 Share #3  Posted September 7, 2023 Yes, the non-APO SL lenses are faster to focus than their APO counterparts. Red Dot Forum recently tested focus speeds at about the 56:40 mark of the following video. (Spoiler: the 'king' of autofocus speed is the Panasonic 50mm f1.8 lens.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TS4BnCA2TYM&t=3400s I recently tested the Panasonic 35mm 1.8 lens and was very impressed by its performance, but ultimately returned it as I decided my 35 APO in M mount would be the 35mm lens I would use, for now, on my SL2-S. If I were in the market today for the non-APO 35mm or 50mm lenses, I would definitely choose the Panasonic versions over the Leica versions. There's a significant cost difference for what I personally believe is an insignificant performance difference. Loyal Leica fans may disagree though. 3
Ken Abrahams Posted September 7, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted September 7, 2023 The video by Overgaard was was a good one. Out of the three SL 50 lenses, the 50 1.4 Summilux would be the slowest to focus. I don't have the 50 Apo SL but I do have the 50 Summicron SL Asph. It's a pretty fast lens and I have written elsewhere that it's light to carry fun to use compared to the Apo sized lenses. algrove Posted September 11, 2023 Author Share #6 Â Posted September 11, 2023 That must be very fast since my APO's focus instantly. Coming from M usage these SL are extremely fantastic.
