Preservation Hall for a performance by its jazz band. Streetcar line. French Quarter (although at late night on weekends can be dangerous as you approach the end).Po-Boy sandwiches at Cafe du Monde. Also note they wash down the streets in the French Quarter in the early AM, so avoid being out and about at that time. Some of the free standing restaurants along the streetcar line offer spectacular food, but you may need reservations...check their menus and reviews out during the day.

This sounds terribly touristy, but it's outstanding - Visit Mardi Gras World in the warehouse district.  That's where they build, repair and store the floats for Mardi Gras.  After a formal tour they set you free to wander the floats as long as you like.

The restaurants are generally not as they used to be, but August, just across Canal Street from the French Quarter, at Hotel de L'Eau Viuve, 301 Tchoupitoulas Street, is probably the best in town.  We ran onto the chef last spring in Dijon, and can assure you August is still in good hands.

I'd been too long since we've been to Breightson's at the far end of the streetcar line in the Garden District, but if it is still good, it's well worth the streetcar ride.

On Canal is Mothers, which has a very special Po-Boy called "the debris," and is filled with the bits of meat that fall off when the meat is sliced.

Just outside of the French Quarter is a lovely spot for drinks and music called the Spotted Cat.
