leicamann Posted August 22, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 22, 2006 Amazing and unreal color, yes Brent its a Blue Monarch..was this in your garden...there is one image posted on FLCKR..but it has been Photoshoped..... I am assuming you didn't Photoshop the butterfly? Thanks for your post. Regards, Leicamann:)
fotografr Posted August 22, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted August 22, 2006 Thanks, John. I kind of figured you'd have it. Yes, this was back in our garden. I just figured it was some kind of mutation because I've seen all kinds of yellow ones--never blue. Of course, the saturation was boosted for web posting. dan_drabek Posted August 23, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 23, 2006 Wow. That definitely qualifies as blue. I've seen thousands of Monarchs, but never a blue one. Glad you were able to make the shot and share it. DD

albert Posted August 23, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 23, 2006 However, it turns out that there are also REAL Blue Monarchs - not the Danaus plexippus monarchs we are familiar with, but Tirumala petiverana of southern Africa where it is known as the African Blue Tiger or Blue Monarch. [Adding to the confusion is the fact that this species is sometimes identified as Danaus limniace petiverana. However, Ackery and Vane-Wright (1984) consider it to be a member of the largely Asian genus Tirumala.] The best image I’ve seen of this species can be found is this one: http://www.amanibutterflyproject.org/petiverana.jpg

albert Posted August 24, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 24, 2006 DD....Here is what I can tell you: I sent the "blue monarch" photo to my old boss at the nature center where I used to teach.....she forwarded this to her buddy who is the big-boss at a butterfly house.....they both are very firmly of the impression that this blue monarch would have to be the only one of it's kind in the known universe.............Al
fotografr Posted August 24, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted August 24, 2006 Al--I think there may have been a bit of unintended color shift when I did the upload. Here's a more accurate one to send off to the butterfly house for ID.
