cj3209 Posted August 27, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I attached a nice 39mm Heliopan filter on my 35 APO lens and it prevents the metal hood from closing completely. Do people just keep the hood a little loose so it can be aligned correctly or not use a filter at all on this lens?

RMF Posted August 27, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2023 @cj3209I use the current Leica UVa II with my 35 APO and the hood snugs fully down and lines up perfectly.
Jared Posted August 27, 2023 Share #3 Posted August 27, 2023 I simply skip the filter. The front element on this lens is quite small and I find it is well enough protected, even by the relatively short hood, that I don't worry about scratching it. Of course, that means cleaning it occasionally which introduces a small amount of risk, but modern multi coatings are hard enough that I just don't worry about the very occasional cleaning. I'm assuming the only reason you want to use a filter is to protect the front element, yes? You aren't talking about a polarizing or ND filter? If that's the case, I would recommend just going without. The odds of scratching the front element on the 35 APO are very low as long as you use the hood. Now a 75 Noctilux, that's another matter...
RMF Posted August 27, 2023 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2023 (edited) Yeah, just use a UV for extra protection since this is such a costly land difficult to replace lens…. also I really never use a lens cap. I agree the lens hood protects well and to me it’s supremely designed as it’s really robust and sturdy. @cj3209 added some shots of the filter/hood combo for you. Welcome, dear visitor! Kreeshp Posted August 27, 2023 Share #5 Posted August 27, 2023 I'm in the always-use-a-filter camp and I've had no fitment issues with the 35 APO and a 39mm B+W 007 Clear MRC Nano filter.
cj3209 Posted August 27, 2023 Author Share #6 Posted August 27, 2023 Thx for everyone's responses. The Heliopan filter doesn't work/fit but I'm going to get the Leica 39mm filter.

The Heliopan filter doesn't work/fit but I'm going to get the Leica 39mm filter. I have a 50mm APO with same mechanism of hood and cap as to 35mm APO. I got the slimmest filter, and keep the hood extended a fully out to cover the filter so that the cap will be snugged firmly
