PS Waverley.  Had a great voyage along the S. Wales coast earlier in the year. 

Reverse gear?  Ahem - "Going astern"   Cracking photo Paul.

Ahh yes. Nautical parlance. The Waverley goes astern very fast - it looks to me like she could go nearly as fast backwards as forwards. FWIW the photo was taken from the Alfred which is a Pentland Firth owned Sea Cat. The two vessels could not be more different and I do wonder what the designers of the Waverley would have made of the Alfred?

Good question!  I had to look up Pentland Ferries in order to get a view of these modern vessels.  Good to see the Alfred has a dog friendly deck

Yes, its a bit of a sore point at the moment since the Alfred been hired to CalMac as new ferries are delayed yet again, due to safety requirements and adjustments now it seems. Government hasn't handled the replacement ferries overwell, but that said, I do think that there is over complex regulation and too may different people/agencies/etc. involved

I did met a friend and her dog on the deck and there were plenty of other dogs on deck too, all excited and eyeing each other amidst a few barks. 

And Philip, yes it is a fascinating story. I've been on quite a few Sea Cats and they are undoubtedly great ships. The largest was the Stena one which crossed the Irish Sea and I've been up in the control room and seen the joystick control which manouevered the whols massive thing around. Only downside is the relatively short working life as many from the '90s have been scrapped. The oldest conventional CalMac frerry is now 38 years old.
