Perceived sharpness is a combination of resolution and contrast. 

Without both cameras to compare side by side it's hard to comment on what's going on here. 

Side by side, contrast seems to be the same. There is more shimmering with the Q3 which leads to a perceived lack of sharpness. Wonder if that has to do with resolution at 3x. On a different note, I find 6x on both models not very exciting.

Given the wonderful EVF and the totally sharp image it shows in playback mode, it should be able to do better.

That does seem to imply it's something to do with the way the firmware is rendering the cropped area of the sensor and can't really be a hardware issue. 

If I recall correctly 'shimmering' was a feature of the original clip-on EVF for the M240 ..... and the way it came and went actually (accidentally) gave you confirmation you were in focus ...... a sort of unintentional peaking (the actual peaking was pretty useless).

Yes, that was how some folks interpreted the "shimmering" on the a7r2 🙂  Don't think it is a hardware issue, either. It is more like running your PC screen not at the optimal resolution - which makes text look less sharp.

Have you tried turning off iDR (intelligent dynamic range), or, better yet, set to save DNG (no JPG)? Does the EVF MF sharpness problem persist even with DNG only?

Yes, iDR is off and it is DNG only. JPG & DNG makes no difference, regardless of JPG size. Neither does JPG only, regardless of size.

Sold the Q3 and kept the Q2. It was good in some ways (mostly I liked the new control layout). That solved the issue 🙂

I'm sorry for the shimmer. That's really too bad.

Have you changed any settings ? If so load the default profile and see if that helps.

I've dropped the refresh to 60hz which has helped a bit and gone for a straightforward field focus with AFs
