Advertisement Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 Hi dritz, Take a look here M11 compatible with the 50mm collapsible Elmar-M?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LeicaR10 Posted August 13, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 13, 2023 (edited) Dritz, You should consult your M11 Manual. The answer in the M11-M manual states the following on page 38: "COMPATIBLE, BUT MAY POSE RISK OF DAMAGE TO THE CAMERA AND/OR LENS – Lenses with retractable tube must only be used with the tube extended, i.e. never attempt to retract the tube while the lens is attached to the camera. This does not apply for the current Makro-Elmar-M 90 f/4 model, as its tube will not retract into the camera itself and can therefore be used without restriction." So, I would not retract the 50 collapsible Elmar-M if it were me. r/ Mark – Edited August 13, 2023 by LeicaR10
DadDadDaddyo Posted August 13, 2023 Share #3 Posted August 13, 2023 (edited) Leica says it is not, right in the M11 manual. Has to do with the space, the width as I understand it, in the throat of the space in front of the shutter. I don't think I'd try it. Some say it's fine. I just don't fancy pushing the lens in and discovering some kind of interference. I wish it was fine to collapse it. It's a great lens, but I don't think it's worth trying to collapse it just to gain that small additional thinness. Cruise the forums and you'll find folks who say they collapse theirs all the time. Fine for them. Some folks have added a ring of Dymo label tape to the rear half of the lens shaft, permitting them to collapse the lens somewhat but preventing it from being pushed all the way in. Seems like a lot of trouble for a small amount of accomplishment. I've sometimes wished Leica had brought out a non-collapsing version. I confine my collapsing of lenses on the digital M bodies to the marvelous Macro Elmar 90, a glorious lens, useful for so much more than portraiture. (Whoops - typed this reply just as the above reply from LeicaR10 came through. Oh well, perhaps the repeating will serve to underscore the advice in the manual...) J S H Posted August 14, 2023 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2023 Just as another data point, I have had no issues collapsing mine on both an M6 and M11. It's quite compact once it's collapsed.
rich_ Posted August 14, 2023 Share #5 Posted August 14, 2023 Opps, i didn't read that part of the manual. My 50mm Elmar-M collapses without issue on a M11. Also worked fine on the M10. I have no excuse either for not checking! I requested the paper copy of the manual which is still sitting under the coffee table!
chris7273 Posted August 14, 2023 Share #6 Posted August 14, 2023 My elmar 50 3.5 collapses in the M11 without problem. I mesured before trying, I would advise you measure too as tolerances may differ between exemplars or batches …
