I already had two profoto D1 with a Nikon air remote which works fine in the studio for my Leica Q, SL & SL2 ( I used Nikon camera before ) still have Nikon SB-600 & SB900 flash

Now I want to buy Profoto A10 for location shoot. ( I also have Leica SF40, the connection with the hotshoe is very loose as the flash dropped once during work,  Leica not fix it as I bought on eBay, where can I get it repair with a fee in London please ?)  or to buy a LEICA SFC1 will be the other option

As Profoto does not offer Leica version for A10 , which A10 should I buy? A Nikon version maybe?

As I already had Profoto’s  Nikon Air remote, is it worth the buy the Leica connect?

Is it mainly for off camera TTL?

Keep Leica SF40 +  buy SF C1

or

Buy Profoto A10 with Leica Connect ?

thank you in advance!

  • CodyChoi changed the title to Leica SF40 or Profoto A10 for SL2

I have the older Profoto A1 in Nikon mount, and it triggers just fine on the SL2 for me. As you know, it is a manual only affair if you use it on camera that way. I recently got the Leica version of the Profoto air remote and I find that it works very well for me so far. I am still figuring it out, but in general I was able to pop it in the hotshoe and it immediately gave more or less accurate flash exposures when used with an off camera A1 or my B1 lights. I find it more convenient than the older manual air remote that I was using before. You can also use it to remotely change the flash power a bit more easily than the generic air remote.

All my repairs needed to go to japan's manufacture.

Early on I was using the profoto with trigger, but it is only compatible with SL2.

Got some godox with leica trigger, that works on most cameras, M11 still nothing.

The only TTL system that works on every leica is the Leica flash and trigger, I use SF60 and the leica trigger for it.
There are many things I don't like about the flash from leica!

The endless quest for a simple light.

I use the Profoto A1 (Nikon version) with my M10's and the Connect puck. Manual only of course, but I prefer that to all of the TTL pre-flash silliness. I was surprised when years ago I was shooting at the Sundance film festival, and all the Getty, etc guys were using their Nikon/Canon flashes in manual mode. More predictable they said, and less to go wrong. I do wish the big mfg had never dropped the Auto sensor from their flashes. My go to back in the day was the Vivitar 285.

Leica M10M, 18mm Elmar, Profoto A1, off camera.

I am not seeing any pre-flash when using the Leica with the TTL and Profoto Leica module. I agree though, would be nice to have the auto mode in flashes again. Kind of like incident meters vs reflective…

Well, could be with the SL line (and who knows, M11? neither of which I own) Leica got their TTL act together. When I owned an SF-58 with my M9/10 it would make an obvious pre-flash that startled the subject before the actual flash and photo was taken. Great way to miss the 'decisive moment.'

I sent Profoto an email late last year asking if they had plans for a Leica A-10...Their response below at least sounds hopeful!

Hey there.. I think it really depends what you want to do with it. I have an A1, A10 and have recently bought an A2 as well.. I never use it on camera, but I have done more jobs with those little flashes and putting them in a Profoto Deep M umbrella white, or in the new Clic Octa than you would believe.. it’s so tiny and SO useful. Way more than I expected. The A system is so solid, I highly recommend. But, if you just need something that goes in your hotshoe and does the traditional flash thing, then go the Leica one.

Honestly, I don’t really think of my A’s as speedlites.. I tend to treat them more like little heads, if that makes sense.

Just to reiterate.. the Profoto Clic gear is REALLY good.
