Harvey Posted July 19, 2023 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Time to add another lens to the two existing, 28mm and 50mm lenses. Do I go 75mm or 90mm budget £300.00 any thoughts? Edited July 19, 2023 by Harvey

LeicaR10 Posted July 19, 2023 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) Harvey, You ask a question that in reality only you can answer. It would depend on your genre of photography. Do you take portraits, landscapes, family photographs, etc.? Each focal length has it merits depending how you "see" the scene and actually the world around you. Many well meaning and sage photographers in the forum to include myself, would tell you to select the 90 as a 75 would be too close to the 50. Well that all depends on how you "see". I know a good many photographers who use, 28, 50, 75, others select the 90. It also depends on your budget that you mentioned. All written above, here are several links that might help you decide for yourself what might work best for you. The links take to Leica lenses, but you might find some bargins with other third party lenses makers that may render similar. The intent is the focal length vs the actual manufacturer. Hope this helps. r/ Mark 75mm try: https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=382&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32 90mm try: https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=389&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32 PS...Personally, I use the 90 Elmarit-M that is a excellent lens and might be close to your budget. Leica also made the excellent 75mm Summarit f/2.5 and later updated it to f/2.4 and same for the 90mm Summarit f/2.5 lenses updated to f/2.4. Those links for the f/2.5 are next. The site has links to the f/2.4 versions as well. Both Summarits are most excellent as well and can be found previously owned and close to your budget. 75mm Summarit Try: https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=384&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32 90mm Summarit Try: https://onfotolife.com/lens_sample_photos?lens_id=393&page=1&focal_min=0&focal_max=800&aperture_min=0&aperture_max=32 Edited July 19, 2023 by LeicaR10 1
Harvey Posted July 19, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted July 19, 2023 Thank you Mark my style as you might see from my recently posted photos is diverse. I’m looking for an experience when shooting with my M8. The 28 and 50mm fulfill my needs on a day to day basis. The longer lens is a bit of fun. I want a vintage quality lens. I take a few portraits and might consider the lens as a being used in this pursuit. Outdoors or with the new CF flash or both. I think without using an IR cut filter so mainly B&W. I will have a look at your links thanks again
Harvey Posted July 19, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted July 19, 2023 I have found a Minolta M-rokkor 90mm 1:4 Leica M Mount any thoughts?

I want a vintage quality lens. The earlier 90/2.8s might fit your needs although a 90mm might be tricky to focus wide open on the M8 at time (from experience). Whilst not as 'sharp' wide open as more modern designs, the earlier 90/2.8 lenses work well stop down, may just have a slight propensity to flare and will have plenty of character. For ~£300 you may well find one in quite reasonable, 'user' condition. The Minolta will be fine, but personally I'd look for a 2.8 lens despite its potential other drawbacks if its for a 'bit of fun'. Added later. I don't think that I would recommend a fast 75 or 90 simply because on the M8 they will be at the limit of rangefinder accuracy. Ouroboros Posted July 19, 2023 Share #6 Posted July 19, 2023 Agree with pgk above but would add that you need to be aware of the M8 sensor crop factor. You'll probably find more 90mm Leica or 90mm Minolta lenses within your budget than 75mm lenses. For what you want it for, look at the older 90mm f2.8 elmarits as a starting point. Otherwise, if any of the current new CV 75mm & 90mm lenses are beyond your budget you might like to think about buying a used CV lens. They're all good, you'll likely find a bargain Voigtlander lens within your budget. I can definitely vouch for the original CV 90mm f3.5 apo-lanthar in ltm, which is easily adapted to M mount with rangefinder coupling for your M8. I used one for backpacking in the early 2000's, it's an excellent lens if you can find one in suitable condition.
Harvey Posted July 19, 2023 Author Share #7 Posted July 19, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) That cv 90mm f3.5 is in short supply in uk. Elsewhere it’s priced well above my Budget. Shame as it sounds ideal

Shame as it sounds ideal I meant the original, now discontinued CV ltm 90mm apo-lanthar f3.5, not the current M mount version. This is the lens. Disclaimer: I've never heard of Camley Photographic Limited and I'm not recommending them at all. I linked to the page as the first example of the CV 90mm f3.5 ltm apo-lanthar I found through Google for illustration purposes only: https://www.camleyphotographic.com/shop/voigtlander-apo-lanthar-f3-5-90mm-ltm-lens-boxed-graded-ln-9258/ Edited July 19, 2023 by Ouroboros

Harvey Posted July 24, 2023 Author Share #12 Posted July 24, 2023 The new lens has arrived. Lol without the m adaptor! no matter, will have a go on Thursday and publish anything worthwhile. It’s wet out there so I’m going to go cautiously as I have no idea how the m8 responds in the damp
