Just purchased the SF 24D used to use with the Q3 - based on lots of positive reviews and it's small size, however it does not seem to support TTL mode on the Q3 - not sure if mine is defective or that's just how the Q3 works.

It's supposed to work TTL with the Q2.  I can't imagine why it wouldn't work with the Q3.

Hi Shane Oneill,
Check out this option for your Leica Q3 here. It could be just what you need for fill-in.

I'm curious, why on earth did Leica stop making the SF26?

It seems the perfect size for the Q cameras.

Because Leica never “made it” to begin with. It was just a rebadged Metz 26 AF, and Metz is out of the flash business.

I've recently bought the FLASH Q Q20. It's a great flash, it has a remote trigger included in the flash, so you can detach it and use it as external flash for filling.

I'ts very small and has many features, even a modeling led light.

Hey there,

sorry for the silly question but I have the Q3 but have never shot with flash.  I bought the Lightpix Q20II but can't seem to get it to work on the Leica Q3, am I missing something ?
Any tips, how-to's would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hope you bought the manual version of the flash, versions for SONY or other brands will not work with leica. Remember you have to switch on both the flash and the mini trigger...otherwise will not work.

The LIghtpix Q20-II works fine with the Q3. I use it pretty often. If you have it on camera, you only need to switch on the flash. The trigger needs to be started manually ONLY if you take the main unit off to flash off camera.

However... I have found out that pushing the flash shoe all the way in and tightening it up will lead to the flash not firing on the Q3. Push the shoe full in and then pull it back out a little bit (maybe 1mm). It will start working.

Thank you for your reply.
Ah, ok maybe this explains why the mini trigger flasher red when depress the shutter on the Q3…?

From my limited experience with one copy of the SF24D it had terrible inconsistency issues with ttl, as though it needed to warm up like an athlete before performing.  The SF58 while large is a great flash but not for a Q size camera and I don't know if it will ttl properly.  The SF60 has been a great flash for me but again the size would keep me from purchasing it.  I don't have any experience with the SF40 but would think it would be the most ideal based on what's currently available.  The exceptional flash based on my use is the SF26, now discontinued, it can be put in a pocket or carried on the Q, it will barely add weight and bulk, I don't know if it will ttl properly with the Q3, if it does it would be my number one choice.

Godox Lux Junior is a recurring recommendation on the forum.

Just bought it today, it is a great flash for such a small one. Will only use it manual, but it really fits in any photo bag, and will be great as fill light. Thanks T.

if the godox is compatible with the Q3 and is also compatible with fuji x100 series and olympus pen series does that mean my small flashes for the fuji and olympus will be compatible with the leica Q3?

sorry i dont know much about flashes or how they work. i just want a very small, compatible flash i can carry around should the need arise

thanks

Great question, I have some Godox flashes I use with my Fuji cameras, would be perfect if they work with the Q3.

I received yesterday the Godox Lux Junior, just tested it to make sure everything was working and it's ok. Very small and pretty (old style)...

I'm just going to have to learn how to use a manual flash because I don't know if auto mode is enough for all situations.

I bought the Godox Lux Junior yesterday. It doesn't play well with the Q3. It looks like the Q3's shutter fires too slowly relative to the flash. Manual mode at 1/64 output or Auto used close-up makes the unit generate very short flash durations and that results in very dark pictures, giving rise to the suspicion that the light burst is over by the time the shutter opens. Going to manual mode at 1/4 output or shooting in Auto with subjects at 2 m gives the desired results.

I tried all flash-related combination of settings under "Flash Settings" in the menu, nothing made a difference. I guess things like "Flash Mode" = "Slow Sync" and "Flash Sync" = "End of Exp." only are effective when a compatible flash is mounted; the Godox only has a center pin for firing the flash and that's it.

This Godox flash works perfectly when mounted on my Sony A7R4, even at its maximum sync speed of 1/250 s the pictures are evenly and correctly exposed.

I tried a vintage flash with the classic Auto mode with a sensor on the flash unit, the Minolta Auto 200X. That works flawlessly with the Q3, so it seems that the Godox is very quick to fire, quicker at least than that Minolta flash. Puzzling it is.

Too bad, the Godox Lux Junior is a very nice fit on the Q3, light and small. Now looking for an alternative.

A lot of different flashes will work with the Q3 in manual mode.  I have used the Lightpix Labs Q20 II with the Q3 and, fwiw, an old M6 without any issues.  Folks at B&H have been helpful in the past with recommending compatible flashes with the Q/Q2/Q3.  If you want TTL, then you will be paying a bit more.  Hope the information is helpful.
