Advertisement Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Hi Shane Oneill, Take a look here SMALL flash for Q3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted July 17 Share #2 Posted July 17 Leica SF 24D That would be the official recommendation. I don't have it, but I am sure it would do the job - at a price.
Shane Oneill Posted July 17 Author Share #3 Posted July 17 thnaks they seem to be around 400 was looking for something considerably cheaper if possible
1945 Mouton Posted July 17 Share #4 Posted July 17 I have the Leica SF40, which is an over-kill as a fill flash even though it's pretty small and not that powerful. For fill, you can probably use a number of third-party manual flashes without having shell out big bucks for Leica flashes (which are made by other manufacturers by the way). All the Leica flashes are made by third-party manufacturers - SF 28 and SF-58 are made by Metz and the SF-40 is made by Nissin. pcgarner
Anakronox Posted July 18 Share #5 Posted July 18 Third party is the way to go if you don’t mind losing TTL. I use Godox flashes and strobes and their Nikon shoe mount units work just fine in manual mode across all of my Leicas.
Tomas Eriksson Posted July 18 Share #6 Posted July 18 Godox Lux Junior is a recurring recommendation on the forum. Shane Oneill and Simone_DF

StefanoGili Posted July 18 Share #8 Posted July 18 (edited) I've recently bought the FLASH Q Q20. It's a great flash, it has a remote trigger included in the flash, so you can detach it and use it as external flash for filling. https://erickoke.wordpress.com/2020/11/19/flash-q20-review/ I'ts very small and has many features, even a modeling led light. Shane Oneill Posted July 18 Author Share #9 Posted July 18 if the godox is compatible with the Q3 and is also compatible with fuji x100 series and olympus pen series does that mean my small flashes for the fuji and olympus will be compatible with the leica Q3? sorry i dont know much about flashes or how they work. i just want a very small, compatible flash i can carry around should the need arise thanks Hans-Dieter Gülicher
LocalHero1953 Posted July 18 Share #10 Posted July 18 It depends what you mean by compatible. As far as I am aware no non-Leica flash can communicate with a Leica body for TTL automatic flash control. However most third party flashes can be triggered from a Leica body from a centre pin, so can be used in manual or 'Auto' mode (i.e. when the flash has its own light sensor and chooses its power setting after you have told it the aperture and ISO). 1945 Mouton
Shane Oneill Posted July 18 Author Share #11 Posted July 18 i am just worried that if i connect it it may damage the camera if it's not compatible thanks

Just purchased the SF 24D used to use with the Q3 - based on lots of positive reviews and it's small size, however it does not seem to support TTL mode on the Q3 - not sure if mine is defective or that's just how the Q3 works. katieg Posted July 22 Share #13 Posted July 22 I like the Fujifilm flash, I think it’s the EF-X20. Setting the flash manually doesn’t bother me. Love the small size and works very reliably for me when needed. I also use a Nikon flash cable for when I want to move location of flash off top of camera. I think it’s the SC-17 TTL cable. I have been using a Godox flash for Nikon for the last 3-4 years now. All good. jaapv and idusidusi
Anakronox Posted July 23 Share #15 Posted July 23 Same experience as Simone_DF here. I use a mix of Godox V860IIN, V350N, and some others I can’t remember but they all work without issue on my Ms, Qs, and SL2. I even have the round head Godox in Canon pinout and it works just fine. Also use AD200 portable strobes and the X-Pro N and X-Pro F triggers without fault. liggy

Like all Leica badged accessories, it was probably over-priced, but the form factor - it can be folded down on camera - and has multiple angles for fill, bounce etc matches well with the Q3. It works with the Q3 - TTL with variables such as shutter speed and f stop etc all giving accurate results, plus it can be used as a slave and has a small "video light". Like some other "earlier" models, it is quite a tight fit mounting it into the Q3 shoe. There is a release button that needs to be pressed to aid in mounting the SF26 on the Q3 shoe. I did try using a dremel to (carefully) file away some of the SF26's metal mounting foot, but I'm not sure this made much of a difference - possibly a little. But the SF 26 works, has a small form factor that you wanted, and has the added bonus of TTL with the Q3. You can reduce the power output directly from the Q3 menu for fill flash or other effects. I had to hunt around for a while before finding one from a Japanese Leica camera store - so extra postage to Australia. Paul darylgo

Simone_DF Posted July 27 Share #18 Posted July 27 Yes, the X-Pro Trigger is now available for Leica and it does TTL.
Nick_London Posted July 27 Share #19 Posted July 27 I'm curious, why on earth did Leica stop making the SF26? It seems the perfect size for the Q cameras.

Still never use TTL, even with the SF-60 but I know what you mean.
