i see delete but no protect option

I don't think there is an option. The best solution I have found is never delete in camera and download as soon as I get home - at the end of the day at least.

If the goal is to use the camera to delete all images on a card except for a select few, the closest workaround would be rate the images you wish to keep, then use the Delete Unrated option.

Same.  Memory cards are so inexpensive that even if I fill one, I put in a new one and then download at the end of the day.

Which is the best option anyway, as it avoids fragmenting the card. Only format the card after downloading and backing up. That is the best policy. Or just keep the card as a supplementary backup and use a new one.
