ECliffordSmith Posted August 22, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, I have recently setup a pbase account and this is the first time I have attempted to compress my images. Are there any general guidelines for compressions levels and/or file size for web destined images please? Are there any tools to perform bulk compressions? Any tips would be very gratefully received! Thanks, Ed
Advertisement Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hi ECliffordSmith, Take a look here JPEG Compression Levels And Tools. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 22, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 22, 2006 The rules that apply here are a reasonable compromise - you don't want the images to be too big, either in pixel count or file size. So, less than 240kb and no wider/taller than 960 is what goes here. I keep my postings to a max of 800 wide, as 960 is too tall for most monitors. GraphicConverter is the best batch-modification software I have found.
ECliffordSmith Posted August 22, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted August 22, 2006 Andy, Thank you for the response. That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, Ed
rob_x2004 Posted August 22, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 22, 2006 Any site you go to, it is worth having a look at what members are posting. You get a feel for what loads well and looks good, acceptable and poor, in a place with respect to file size and pixel dimensions V site setout, by right clicking and having a look at the properties of the posted images. ECliffordSmith Posted August 23, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted August 23, 2006 Hi, I tried a few tools last night and found them to be very slow and CPU intensive. Is this a common observation? I also found that there is an image module for Python which I have installed. It provides the programatic functionality I need and I managed to convert some files in the interpreter. I now just need to put some error handling etc in and I will have a program to do this. Has anybody else used this module? Sorry if this is becoming more IT than photography. If so please let me know! Thanks, Ed
hdg Posted August 23, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 23, 2006 I use Irfan View (free ware) for batch converting. It is a surprising program. Regards Hans
