Adam_James Posted June 28, 2023 Share #1 Posted June 28, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I recently purchased (2) Leica S lenses with the intention of using them on my SL2-S. I purchased the 120 Apo Macro and the 180 Apo Tele Elmar-S. I’ve read mixed things online on the process of using an S lens on a SL2-S body. I’ll be purchasing the adapter next week. The seller doesn’t know if lens firmware has been updated and doesn’t have an S body any longer. What’s the protocol for this? How would I know if lens firmware was updated. Do I just buy the S to L adapter and see if it works and go from there? Thanks in advance, Adam
Advertisement Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 Hi Adam_James, Take a look here Do I need to update lens firmware if I want to use S lenses on my SL2-S body?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
davidmknoble Posted July 4, 2023 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2023 Adam, I have not tried this, but I guess it is possible that if you put the lens firmware on an SD card, and attached an S lens to the SL, it might recognize the lens and install the firmware. Not sure. I will say the S lenses have always worked fine for me on the SL system. They focus about as fast as on the S system (slow) and the SL lenses are leaps ahead on autofocus, but I mainly shoot landscapes so I am slow and intentional anyway. Interesting to see what happens… David
siddhaarta Posted July 4, 2023 Share #3 Posted July 4, 2023 (edited) This is what the Manual for the Leica S Adapter L says: COMPATIBLE CAMERAS The Leica S adapter L is only intended for use on Leica SL camera models. The Leica SL must have at least firmware status 2.0. If this is not the case, you should load the current firmware version. Please refer to the camera manual for details. COMPATIBLE LENSES All Leica S lenses can be used, provided that they have the minimum firmware status XXX.46.X(X).X (X, or (X) = placeholder, varies depen- ding on lens). Limitations on function and possibly even faults are possible with lenses with earlier firmware statuses. Firmware updates for these lenses can only be carried out on a Leica S (type 007). Contact your Leica dealer if you do not have such a camera to hand. The use of other medium-format lenses with the help of the five different Leica S adpaters is not supported. I would say that chances that your lenses have the latest firmware may be not that bad as the latest version was published in 2018.
