ArtZ Posted November 11, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This morning at the Empire State Bulding and this afternoon at Wall Street, my scrolling wheel refused to obey. I turned it clockwise to zoom some pictures but the wheel kept on going counter-clockwise. As I said on other threads, this happens ONLY with one of my M8 (the newest). With th old one I've never suffered of this. Has anyone else noticed the same problem with the newest firmware which suppose to correct this? Thanks PS: I went to B+H Photo Video this morning to buy a light meter for the M8s. God! what a place! Of course, you can find everything (though they didn't have 39mm IR/UV Leica filters) but it's just a mad place... You feel like in a factory or like going to a Mc Donald's or something like that. I would never go there again.

I have not gotten any venetian blinds so far, but I would not be surprised if that is still there.

LichMD Posted November 11, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 11, 2007 Since the firmware I get less skipped photos when reviewing, but I get a few seconds of flashing red boxes in the menu screen. Typically this extinguishes by pressing menu again or play or turning off the camera. It would be nice to have a problem fixed by firmware instead of having a new one pop up and having the original problem incompletely corrected. Love the pictures the camera produces though. mhoersch Posted November 12, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2007 Skipping pictures (the next-this-next picture thing) seems to be completely gone, although Leica hinted that this might have to do with the type of SD card used. I'm very happy about this, because with the previous firmware it happened so often (almost by default) that it drove me crazy. Zooming out instead of in when turning the wheel clockwise happened only once with the new firmware, quite often with the previous release.

If you lived in New Zealand you would yearn for this place where you can get anything you want-anything! and for half the price as outside the us..Did you go upstairs to the used store there? It feels more like a little old camera shop if you don't like the big factory vibe. Surprised they didn't have the 39 ir filter, if its available BnH has it generally....Brad

A colour temperature meter I could understand... John, I don't find very accurate the "AUTO" mode light measuring. I keep compensating -1/3 or -2/3 to avoid highlights burnt. So I've been using an old light meter and shooting only in "MANUAL" mode. I get better results. So I have just upgraded my old light meter for a new one . I can tell you the guy I saw yesterday didn't know much about light meters, nor Leica. As the first seller couldn't find any Leica filter on his monitor (he said to us "Leica is having financial problems and it's very difficult to get items from them") we went to the "Used Leica Counter" (it's only one person dealing with it) and he didn't know even that M8 need to have IR cut filters! (I'm not joking). I went downstairs, I paid and I got my light meter and a B+W #486 52mm for a Nocton 50/1.5 being coded by J. Milich and we left the shop like if we were in another planet. I bought in Auckland (if I check my bills I could tell you the name) some Canon L lenses in 2003. I was wery happy with that shop. First time there and they were very helpful. Even with all "Duty Free" papers.
jlm Posted November 12, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 12, 2007 for those who haven't been there, B&H: 1. has a rigorous closing schedule: closed Friday afternoons til Sunday, closed for many religous holidays...always check their site for opening hours. 2. for cameras and lenses: you wait in line, move to the counter and get the next salesman, pick out your parts from the online catalog, with his assistance and wait a couple of minutes for the shuttle to bring them up to the counter. examine, etc, if you decide to buy, he writes the slip, sends your parts on an amazing overhead conveyer to the pickup counter. then you might shop elsehere ibags, n the store for tripods, or whatever, same thing, though ususally you grab a salesman on the floor. when finished, go to pay out, then to pickup to receive your bagged items. 3. they have practically everything: pro-lighting, Slr's, view cameras, bags, tripods, paper, printers, books, computers, video, plasma screens, you name it and I doubt you can beat the price. 4. it can get crowded, especially on Sunday. if their computers go down, go somewhere else. It is a mad scene but incredibly efficient. they must do a massive daily sales. there are many more personal photo stores and more specialized ones in NYC, but B&H is the Coney Island of them all. for Leica: Photovillage, Tamarkin, and Ken Hansen, if you can find him
ArtZ Posted November 12, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted November 12, 2007 John, very good description ! We arrived at 9:30 (they open at 10H00). At 9:30, at least 50 people were waiting outside. At 10:00 at least 200 people. They have everything but you must know exactly what you want: I was hesitating between a Gossen Digipro F and a Sekonic. The vendor couldn't help me much. I got at the end the Sekonic but I don't know why. Maybe I'm too old but I prefer to spend a few Euros/Dollars extra and to experience the pleasure of shopping in a more relaxing way. But as John says, if you know exactly what you want it's a great place to get your gear but I think it's better (more relaxed) to order it online than in the shop itself. . larry Posted November 12, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 12, 2007 Manuel, Judging from your description of B&H, I doubt that I would like the in-store experience either. I've purchased quite a lot from them online and I've always been very pleased. As far as the scrolling problem is concerned, my camera no longer does this since I upgraded the firmware. It seems odd that some people are still having the problem and others aren't. Larry
marknorton Posted November 12, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 12, 2007 And, if you look at where all those goods are made, it's likely China, Taiwan and Japan. When I look at the equivalent in the UK (though I don't know of anything on the same scale), it comes as no surprise that we, like the US, run a massive trade deficit due to the unquenchable thirst for imported product.
